Ok so the extra time in Beorns house is actually helpful. The added scenes with Thrain are not. And the trippy forest sequence goes on even longer which is also not helpful. I'll watch the rest later.

Me too. Even though I was hoping for more than 25 minutes. I really wanted the Laketown stuff and the romance to be a lot more fleshed out. From what I've heard, I might get the former, but not the latter, which is kind of a bummer.

Part of me wishes more time was spent on the characterization of the dwarves (which is utterly non-existent in the books), but these are already such long stories it runs into the 'which part do you cut out' problem? the overall Hobbit story is already going to be 8 hours from start to finish, for a 250 page book. Part of me is glad they fleshed it out, since I don't think the hobbit condensed into a 3 hour movie would have worked. The motivations for why everything happens is already so thin, and just rushing through the main story means you can't spend any time lingering in the world, which is one of Jackson's strengths as a storyteller-at least in middle earth.
