with animal? The way there are these tiny gaps during the main riff--like little holes that silence is just about to fill up until the riff comes crashing back down on top of it.

Okay, as much as I love the first 3 songs on S/T, the first 3 on vs. are the best 3 song run in the catalog.

Also, after listening to the 13 boots, I am starting to wonder if Brendan O brien produces the way he does with Pearl Jam now is because PJ are incapable of really nailing a performance :\
Maybe he has to punch in sections. Maybe they are too sloppy now? Just makes me wonder.
Certainly Ed...
You wonder if he can even sing Infallible on a good day with full vocal rest....

For years and years I had vs. ranked above ten. every now and then I remember why.

I think it's better than both!

For strat, Daughter may be the one that is hurt most by how much its been played live. I forgot how incredible the studio version is until I hear it.
Small Town too, maybe.

Do you think Pearl Jam are capable of recording (sound wise/performance wise) something as great as Vs? In their current state.
I dont think they are. If Vs. was recording mostly live......

I mean they're probably more potentially impressive songwriters right now than they were on Vs. They've been at this for a long time and Eddie, for instance, I think is far more adept at writing melodies now than he once was. But there is a primal, visceral, elemental, desperate energy to this album that elevates absolutely everything it touches. And I don't think they'll ever be able to tap into that again. They're grasping for something here they eventually found, and even if they let go I don't think you reach for it again in quite the same way

That pearl jam has been dead since Vitalogy, Strat. From No Code on they've been a different band. Maybe better (I don't think so, but many/most do) but undeniably different.

Mid-tier Pearl Jam. Too many stupid songs.

My favorite pearl jam lyric ever is the couplet in Breath 'if I knew where it was I would take you there/there's much more than this.' Basically after Vitalogy they found it. And the music is no longer really about seeking it with you. It's about showing you the way. And that's just never been as compelling to me.

not so much tap into that sort of energy or reate something as great as VS...
More so.... could they even be capable of getting in the studio, recording mostly live, and put out an album with a similar amount of respect? Up through S/T I always believed that they could get in the studio, do few takes and get something as a full unit that is worht putting out but the last two records I feel different. They can't do it live and on tour - could they even do it while recording an album? Or is BOB exactly what they need to keep it together enough to make a record?
Personally, Id love for them to be far less produced and put something out - warts and all.
I dont know what Im saying.
They were capable up through 2006 without doubt in my mind.

It really is the playing that brings it home.

I think they could, but they'd have to write the right kind of songs for it . If they couldn't quite reach that level I think they could come close.
