I can sort of agree with this preference, except that I really like the side of punk that recognizes it's own cartoonish underpinnings. Bands like the Clash did a great job of exploring and expanding the sounds that influenced punk rock to begin with, the Stooges looked into the chaotic mess of it all (granted they sometimes sounded like the Stones might if Mick Jagger were to get every bit as high as Keith Richards, and Keith were to take that as a reason to get just a little bit higher), and Bad Religion/team dug deep into the adrenalized passion the music allowed for. But the Ramones captured an undercurrent of playfulness in the music that kept it all from being just as self-important as most other 1970's rock was, and I enjoy it quite a bit.BigRedLedbetter wrote:I respect the Ramones and they have a few songs that are ok but I wouldn't call myself a fan. Just not my thing. I like The Clash, Stooges, Bad Religion and Social Distortion much more when it comes to punk. I use to work with a kid obsessed with the Clash and he got me into them.
There's a lot of that goofball quirk coming out of New York in that era, and in general I think pop music could use more of it. Giant ants from space snuff the human race. My building has every convenience. Beat on the brat with a baseball bat, oh yeah.
