Other than Pearl Jam, who else is there?

I've got this 60's nuggets type playlist going right now and this came on:

I'd never heard that before, but the chorus instantly reminded me of this:

I wish there was a better version of Perfect Depth floating around.

They should have cleaned it up and included it in the S&E: Luxe and Reduxe release.

Or better yet, they should have re-recorded it and had Nigel Godrich produce it.

Why do you have to do this?

Why can't we just be friends?

I disagree there. R2D will fight this 2D, but I think he latched on to some intangible thing happening with Pavement's sound on Terror Twilight. He has a way of making everything sound slightly spaced out and open, which serves the gaps between measures on Pavement songs well.

TT isn't good. Should have been SM's first solo album.

We've been down this road. I disagree, of course. Though I fear that my love of TT has given you the impression that I dislike the more ramshackle stuff, which couldn't be further from the truth.

I’m not suggesting he’s a bad engineer by any stretch. But I’ve heard nothing on TT, Mutations, and other records he’s done that are noteworthy or remarkable. Makes me think the genius of the Radiohead records lies mostly with the band.

I worked in a studio for a while that had the same console used on OK Computer, and it was surprisingly easy to mimick a lot of those drum sounds. What’s NOT easy to do is write songs like Radiohead, or to skirt the songwriting line between earnestness and insouciance like Malkmus, without sounding derivative or self-aware.

Really not trying to shit on the dude, because obviously he’s made some stellar records. But I’m convinced his success lies more in his ability to work well with differing personalities, and to help shape the songs from a compositional standpoint. Much of the mystery around OK Computer was dispelled for me once i got some hours on the Neve VR desk, but I’ll never understand how one composes something as lovely as Let Down, and sells their band mates on flushing it out.
Good points. Do we have a producers thread? We probably should.

I think I like this song so much because it's so rare to hear SM be so emotionally direct.

Watching Slow Century again.

The thought of that Pavement/Sebadoh tour gives me a gigantic boner.

That came out of nowhere*

At first I thought to myself, “I like the music much better than the video”, but by the end of the video I felt like I understood...something? How perfectly absurd it all is.

I dig the Kraftwerk vibe of it all.

Good time to be a Malkmus fan.

I’m about to put it on again while I shower just to make sure. Feels like a damn good shower song.

It reminded me of Bowie a little bit. And David Byrne for its "white dude with no groove" purposeful ridiculousness.

I'll reserve judgment until I hear the record. I really like Sparkle Hard.
