I thought the band, especially the drummer, killed it. They clearly listened to a Matt Cameron era live version instead of just the recorded version. The drummer hit the stops just right, and then went into the build up at the end properly, which is the part that gets Ed going. Ed has a talent for harnessing a band's energy so so much better than, say, Dave Grohl. DG you just know exactly when he's going to scream and shake his hair and stuff and you sense that he's guiding the band to follow his hair and scream, essentially. It gets really old for me cause if feels so forced. Ed goes with the drummer (whereas Dave plays the "drummer role" up front) and when the "real" drummer kicks it up a notch the song takes off. He always had the talent to do that, but he's been able to sustain it into a cool thing that feels natural cause he's watched his heroes like Townshend and Bruce. Luckily the drummer did it right and Ed could really get going in the end.

I dont know what you guys watched, but I thought that was one of the worst performances I've ever seen from Eddie, especially on TV.

I dont care that his voice is shot these days because there is that other element he has always been so good at. its endearing and infectious and playful. Someone who truly loves what they are doing. it rarely, if ever, feels detached.

So his vocal chords are shot. Fuck, listen to the way he screamed for 20 years. ITs amazing it took this long.
that performance felt forced. i'm not saying eddie wasn't feeling emotional under the circumstances, but he way overdid it.
i agree-Ed was trying too hard... even with all the flubs, i thought it was as passionate as ever.

why is it hyperbolic? it's not like pearl jam/vedder has performed 1,000 times on tv.

you . . . want me to prove . . . the number of times that band or its lead singer has performed on tv?

That list is incomplete, and includes non-live performances in which just the recording of the song was played...

Yeah, everyone's disappointed in everything here and I get that, but this guy's a paradox... Greatest singer of all time? And he said IS, not used to be... HIS ABSOLUTE FAVORITE BAND!!!! Imagine the expectations from this guy... the pedestal he has put these aging rockers upon... I guess I've lowered my bar a little over the last decade or so.

and the CBS Orchestra carried the performance in monster form
Take some xanax pal.

You want me to say it, then fine: he's lost it. It kills me to say it, but he's chain-smoked his generational-level talent away.

And boo-hoo... "Expectations", now I should apologize for being a fan and expecting him to sing better than an amateur on kareoke night? There's no way you can tell me that Vedder performed up to his level of talent, unless he really is just physically unable to now... Which again, makes me sad. He's not THAT old.

I hate for my few posts here to be negative... But I needed to vent.
Well said, man. Nailed it.

Also, you've been here for just over a year and you've got 4 posts already. Slow down dude, you're gonna flood the board! :D

Belated welcome.

Thanks (and thanks to Burt, too). :)

I've actually popped in every now and then over the course of the last decade when this was separate from sky-i-scrape. I didn't get involved cause it's so overwhelmingly negative at times, hahaha.

...That's how bummed out I was over that performance. ;)

And yes, I remember seeing the Pearl Jam: Storytellers back in 2006ish. Alive was already an anthem.... an angry one. Ed being open-minded enough to see another side to being 'still alive' makes sense in that he's 'grown'.

Betterman... I wish was done as one of the 'sitting down, accoustic' type encore style sets they do... not as a mid-tempo rocker. Certainly not as a send-off for a talk show host.

Anyway... enough negative stuff from me.
