Not sure if I told you this Lament but I remember hanging out at my Aunt's house (circa 1988) and she had Purple Rain on vinyl and it blew my little mind.

There was a time when a new Prince record was a must-listen, but it's been quite a while since he's issued an album I'd call essential or even particularly good. I'd love to see him crack open the vaults and give up the goods.

Morbid but what if he passes suddenly and this music never sees the light of day? :/

Been listening to a fair amount of Prince in the car ride into and from work over the past couple of weeks. Somehow it always turns into a debate with Mrs Rangi about who the better artist was Prince or Michael Jackson

My guess is that he's got plans on paper already. I wouldn't be surprised if he has a slew of "afterlife" projects ready to roll. And if history is a guide, whomever becomes his estate will just release it all anyway. If not, there's quite a bit of unofficial, unreleased material out there now. It would be nice to have it in high quality audio with some liner notes and all that.

I'd call Prince the greater musical artist, but MJ was quite an entertainer/performer. (Having seen both of them live, I'd give the performance edge to Prince, too, but opinions vary.) And really, they've both enriched my life with lots of great music, so no need to declare a winner here.

Make Kevin Smith the head of his estate!

Tough call. 1 and 1A there. My Mom saw both in their prime and can't pick one.
I get in Stones/Beatles, Dylan/Springsteen and Zeppelin/Who debates with friends all the time

You could argue who was the better entertainer, and for most people I would imagine the answer is Michael. As an artist though, Michael Jackson has no business being mentioned in the same sentence as Prince. From 1979 to 2009, Michael was the sole author of about thirty songs on his six records. He had a parade of high profile co-writers and his choice of the best material professional songwriters had to offer. He worked with the biggest name producers at all times. He played no instruments on these records.
In that same period, Prince put out thirty full albums of his own, writing virtually everything on them by himself, playing nearly every instrument on many of them, and handling nearly all production on his own. He also wrote/performed/produced another 10-15 albums worth of material for others artists in this same time period. And has God-know how much material sitting in the vault from these years.
Michael was no doubt one of the greatest performers of the popular music era. But as an artist, he is nowhere near Prince's level.

You should probably just agree with your wife but know in your heart that what I said is true. Live to fight another day.
