Kevin Davis wrote:You're thinking of "Dreaming of You," from Tell Tale Signs. That uses a lot of lines that eventually appeared in "Standing in the Doorway." There are a lot of songs on the Bootleg Series albums that tinker with lyrics that ultimately ended up elsewhere.
That was a nice Bootleg Series. I'll dig that out for another listen soon.
I've never understood how so many modern Dylan fans could revile Self Portrait as much as they claim to. I can definitely see how, upon its release, people would've been dissatisfied, considering it was--probably intentionally--the exact opposite of what every Dylan fan in the world was expecting. But Kevin Davis is right--in retrospect it's a pretty solid, if unremarkable, record.
And even if you don't like it, it's pretty tame stuff. How anyone in 2013 could find any of those songs egregious enough to moan about is beyond me.

The first version of "Mississippi" on the bootleg cd is one of my favorite songs.

I prefer the album version of Mississippi. It's one of my all time favorites.

I think the album version is my favorite Dylan song. For some illogical reason I hate the two alternate versions (I would like them if I never heard the album version). Somehow I feel like listening to them sucks the soul out of the album version, or cheapens it in some strange way. Maybe, like cheating on your wife or something.

I'm with you on this. I wouldn't go so far to call it my favorite Dylan song, but it's way up there.

No way. That first alternate version has all the soul by keeping it stripped down and simple, like you're sitting on a porch in mississippi listening to it being played. I love porches. And lemonade.

You're preference is wrong and you should feel bad!

Side by side, the bootleg version of "Mississippi" is probably superior. But the album version is the one that belongs on "Love and Theft," and "Mississippi" definitely belongs on "Love and Theft." I have a hard time even hearing them as the same song, really--to me they're two more or less totally different things with two different contexts.

Mississippi
Things have changed
The Hurricane
Stuck inside a mobile singing the memphis blues again
Pay in blood
Lily, Rosemary and the jack of hearts
Sad eyed lady of the lowlands
Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest
No time to think
Tempest
Day of the Locusts
Ive tried to construct some sort of list of favorites without going overboard. Looks like I like I tend to go for longer ones. I think someone touched on this but I think the quality and quantity of Dylan's catalog over such a long time period might be one of the most impressive feats any person has accomplished.

I agree, that's a fantastic song, easily among the best on Tempest.

I must say I prefer the bootleg version of "Idiot Wind" too, the one used in the I'm Not There film.
