I stopped reading the front page review after this was referred to as a 'logical extension of Backspacer' When are people going to stop with that? Did someone read it in a magazine and just run with it for the last 4 years? It needs to go away.

OK, but with the caveat that I'm kind of drunk.

Basically there is nothing that I'm unhappy with. Getaway finds some groove that they've been missing since Riot Act (except for in 'Unemployable' and 'Johnny Guitar'). But I prefer this to both songs, possibly. I like the drum tones, and there's more cymbals where there should be.

Lightning Bolt is the same song, but it's really enhanced (I think) by the extra percussion layered on top. Tambourine and shakers, as well as overdubbed toms, enhance the whole thing.

On LTRP, Matt basically just drums to the track, rather than leading it. Same as MYM, really. But still, really not a bad performance. The push on 'Let the records play' is nice, matched by the guitar and bass.

Swallowed Whole's drumming is not spectacular but again, there's nothing inappropriate and nothing that should be played heavier than it is. The song is more summery Counting Crows, so not drum-heavy.

I suggest four beers (two if American, teehee), and spin these tunes. They were all enjoyable but have moved into red hot zone for me. Hearing lots of pieces that are enjoyable here and none of these were the songs I was looking forward to!

First verse: Guitar with a shit ton of effects on it.

Second Verse: Piano

First impression: Wayyyyyy better than Backspacer. It sounds like the "cooler" Backspacer.

So, for what's it worth, here's my wine and rum induced first ramblings:

Now this is odd, creepy even, but as I typed that last sentence Dustin Hoffman in Papillon (on BBC 2 atm) just sounded Getaway! I really enjoyed this one. It chugged along rhythmically and kept me shaking my gluteus maximus. Nice start.
LB - well I've never listened to the chewing gum version and have to say - first verse aside - I very much liked it. It's like a backspacer tune with more meat to its bones. I could make sweet love to it and not worry about dislocated hips.
LTRP - oh dear. It's too corny to me. JG was corny too but it swaggered. Hmm might need a few more listens.
SW - pleasantly surprised. It has its BS roots but it maketh me boppeth alongeth.
