I said that out loud when watching it, "She just punched him in a steel helmet with her bare hand."

If it was anything more than disorienting, it's a shitty helmet, and Mandalorians deserve extinction.

She was a former shock trooper with the rebellion.

She’s made of sterner stuff.

I think this is what happens when you try to expand the SW universe to show what happens when you don’t focus on the Skywalkers or Rebels vs. Empire.

And when you take a cool concept like Boba Fett armor from a background character that 3 lines of dialogue (?) and maybe 1 minutes of total screen time, and try to flesh them out.

You get a weird thing where they can’t take helmets off in front of people, but then takes the helmet off in front of a window. Or armor that doesn’t protect against melee attacks? To be fair, ROTJ showed you could incapacitate stormtroopers by throwing them against trees, or flipping them over your body, or clubbing them with primitive tools.

The not removing helmets thing is new and specific only to THIS story. In The Clone Wars and Rebels, the Mandalorians remove their helmets all the time. Similarly, the "This is the Way" mantra is also new.

All of this leads me to believe that both the helmet protocol and the mantra are new not just to the story but to the Mandalorian culture as well. I will not be surprised at all to learn that these things came about after The Great Purge.

Back in the day of the OT and Kenner action figures, there were swaths of speculative/Legends canon that pondered whether Boba Fett ever took off his helmet. Clearly, that manifested itself in Favreau's young imagination and he wrote it into this show. Given that Filoni and the Lucasfilm story group are all guiding this ship, I trust it. They wouldn't have let Favs introduce something like that if it didn't work with canon.

For the purposes of this story, it doesn't diminish anything for me. I love this kind of stuff. The lore. The mythology. The rituals. Mandalore has a bonkers and thrilling backstory and I'm over the moon to see it expanded here. It's the stuff I like most about the show. It's a lot of what I loved most in TCW and Rebels, too.

And as far as the fight scenes go... that's not the product of not having Skywalkers in it. It's just typical action genre stuff.

Yeah I get what you are saying in both posts. I think I just realized new SW doesn’t work for me like I was hoping it would

I’ll try not to be so critical in here and the TROS thread

I getcha, man. I obviously disagree but I totally understand and hear you. I do wonder how much of that is age. I hope that doesn't sound condescending; I certainly don't mean to come across that way. I just mean, if the OT came out right now or if you were the age you are now when the OT dropped, do you think you would feel the same way about it? Is it more youth and sense memory and nostalgia at this point?

What do you think new SW (particularly The Mandalorian -- because the ST movies are very different) that isn't working for you? It seems the general consistence is that Mando is the return to form many SW fans have been hoping for.

It's a good thing he didn't; it would have destroyed the mystique if people found out he was really Ken from accounting.

just finished the last ep

i really like Carano. She is a quite a presence even if she is not the best actress around. Im not sure about the character though. Im getting tired of the dinamic of the show, the whole - mando gets to do something, he resolves it and then move away with the kid - At this point i want a little more.

The training stuff, the widow, the village...it all seemed pretty stupid to me.

I chalk a lot up to age. I don’t watch many movies to begin with (doing the 50/50 challenge has forced me to watch more than I usually do), and I don’t have the desire to ever put on a PT movie or a ST movie. I don’t even watch the OT on a consistent basis. So if the OT came out now and I went in with fresh eyes, I don’t know what I would think.

So I would say a lot of age and nostalgia are a big part of my gripes with PT and ST. But I do think some of my gripes are warranted, in terms of story structure and script/plot. Still subjective but I feel legit.

Oh yeah. I think, for me, it's just that a lot of the wonky storytelling/structure/script stuff is all over the OT, too. Doesn't mean your points/thoughts aren't valid. I was never a huge Star Wars fan back in the day. It's the ST that's turned me into a big fan. So, I find fewer issues than others with the stuff in those movies.

That’s cool. I hope you and everyone that’s excited for TROS and Mandalorian have a good time. I hope I can go into TROS and be pleasantly surprised.

Apologies to everyone in the general SW thread for any of my posts they thought were shitting on SW. I really want to feel the magic of SW like I did way back when and I’ve had bits and pieces scattered throughout the new stuff.

I’ll try to be optimistic for TROS.

Happy holidays, all.

I have no real gripes about this last episode. I can laugh off punching steal and weird helmet-based behavior while still Loving this show.
