Michael becomes lovable. But it's a long road. Giving him some identifiable humanity and making him good at his job are big parts of what makes the show work, I think. You are literally the only one talking about styles of comedy; Joe asserted "The Office is the GOAT half-hour sitcom," and i countered "Arrested Development is a better half-hour sitcom." It's not about pop culture references, and while still a comedy, the stakes also include hands being bitten off, prison, incest, mental impairment...I absolutely love the first run of AD, but it's a completely different animal than what we're talking about here.

It's not "out of nowhere" if the conversation was about half-hour sitcoms, which it was. Now if Joe had said "The Office is the GOAT half-hour sitcom with likable characters, pretty low stakes, and broad comedy that frequently references pop culture and other ephemera in an effort to bring in as many viewers as possible" you'd have a point, but he didn't so this is just you trying to take control of the conversation. The creators have talked about the conscious decision to make those changes for an American audience. I think they were right. But it is very American. So it makes a degree of sense that it's harder for you to relate.
