But I guess they didn't want to or weren't permitted to include what had already appeared on that shitty rarities box set.
i like the 'Jam' ... never really hear these guys going for it like that in the live shows ...
Substitute "better" with "more generous and upgraded".
I do like what they did include, though much of what remained was instrumental.

Still confused here. Vinyl wise they released 2 versions in 2013. “In utero” and “in utero (2013 mix) which is the one you guys are saying is best?

The latter is a completely new mix by Albini, meant to showcase a version of the album from “a different perspective”: Different takes, a somewhat different sound, somewhat akin to Let It Be Naked. It features a black album cover.
i think i was listening to the latter
so confusing
but i was listening to 20th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition in apple music, but starting with ‘Disc 2’ which had every song name with ‘(2013 mix)’ in parenthesis

I made it clear more than once that all of the relevant and original mixes are on DISC ONE of the 2013 deluxe set, and I even provided the track numbers.
And several of us have made it clear more than once what the "2013 mix" on DISC TWO actually is and how it applies to the discussion.
At that point, it crosses over from the understandable problem of people being confused by the bad terminology and presentation, to the exceedingly necessary idea that the Internet Nation needs a huge dose of Ritalin with a Prevagen chaser.
I'm investing in Xanax myself.

This is really what it is, I think, exacerbated by how similarly named and poorly labeled some of these are on streaming services. The actual mix variations are pretty easy to wrap your brain around IMO:
- 2013 mix (new mix by Albini) - CD2 of 20th anniversary reissue, and standalone RSD vinyl. From what I can tell it's always labeled as "2013 mix."
- Original 1993 mix (Albini's mix of 10 songs plus Scott Litt's mixes of "Heart-Shaped Box" and "All Apologies.") - every other version of the album*, though there are multiple masterings of varying quality
*The exception to this is the censored Wal-Mart version, which also contains a third Litt remix ("Pennyroyal Tea") in lieu of Albini's version. Not sure why this happened, but I don't think this version of the album is going to be found anywhere other than in thrift shops, so it's not really a going concern for anyone trying to sort this stuff out today.
The original Albini mixes of "Heart-Shaped Box" and "All Apologies" appear as bonus tracks on the 20th anniversary but, to my knowledge, have never been released commercially as part of the proper album sequence. The Litt remix of "Pennyroyal Tea" appears as a bonus track on this reissue as well.
Compared to Beatles, Bob Dylan, etc., mix variations, where you've got stuff like this but also the confusion of mono vs. stereo, US vs. UK pressings, etc., In Utero is a piece of cake!

That's very true, and it's probably a big reason for my perceived snobbish exasperation.
That and repeating the same facts six ways till Sunday.

Trees, I'm prescribing you a five day break from this thread.
You're too valuable to us to have you come to harm because of these labelling snafus.

i enjoyed the 2013 mix, overseen by albini
i still consider it pure
i liked the different snippets added to it and the different tones
i apologies to happy trees if we were making internet idea love over two different albums last night
it doesn't change the passion i felt
it was real

Shut the fuck up.
If they did this with Binaural, you would all be creaming over the details.
Not at all. This type of stuff does absolutely nothing for me.
If an album is remixed bc it’s universally considered bad (eg. Replacements “Tim”) then that’s one thing. But the different mixes of an album that I think sounds fine (even if it’s PJ) fall into the “do not care” bucket for me.

I very much agree with this in regards to modern remixes of old albums, which often feel like cash-grabby attempts to get people to re-buy albums they already own. Occasionally they're cool but most of the time I have no interest.
I do enjoy vintage alternate mixes though, just because a lot of them have cool/weird stories behind them and I find it fun to dig into stuff like that.

Sorry to get off topic...
But watching the SNL 50 Years of Music doc, I was so touched by the Nirvana footage. It really choked me up and made me miss this goddman band so much. What a force. What an actual pivot moment in time. Fuck, I'm gonna get all weepy again typing this...
