LTRP has grown on me. Even thought he chorus is still a little "Charles in Charge", the guitar playing is phenomenal and that alone is worth a listen.

Really?

I feel differently. I think MYM is a close relative of all these. OK, it's punk rawk and all that but it's mostly in a major key and has this happy upbeat atmosphere in it's melody.

Not sure about that, I wouldn't call it 'happy' even if it's upbeat. The riff isn't half as 'happy' as these are. It's not claw-your-face-off aggressive but it's more hard-hitting than these.

Naturally.
But to me it's hard hitting in the same shiny mood with the others.

I expect Pearl Jam to sound like Pearl Jam. There is some new stuff in these songs that I haven't heard them try before and that's all I ask of them.

We can agree there, absolutely. I think the track fits with these fine, I just meant that before we had these, we might have expected them to be different, leading some to be even more disappointed that they weren't. MYM was "OK" to some of the haters, but if other songs had been in a more similar vein, that "OK" could've become really good. But then not everyone agrees with me that a song can be lifted or brought down by its context.

Given that, I am enjoying the shit out of these.

Exactly how I feel. Why compare to 90's PJ? I'm not an angst filled, over emotional teenager anymore so I don't expect the band to be. If I heard "Black" for the first time now that I'm in my mid 30's I'd think it was an overreaction to a high school relationship type song. Would not appeal to me and my life now. I'd probably think, "Why are these guys trying to over dramatize an end of a relationship?" Shit happens.

I think these songs are solid songs. They are upbeat and happy, I can live with it. Jeff sounds great in these and I'm surprised how go Ed sounds.

Oh yes it can, there is no doubt about that.
But there are songs and there are songs.
Some are self sufficient to a degree of not needing any sort of context at all.

Or progressing into something you don't like. I think anyone pushing forward could be said to be being 'who they're not'.
