I like Just Breathe...it's a great little song. But it's more of an EV song than a PJ song. Sirens is overly melodramatic and sappy but there is a good song in there somewhere.

A lot of potential from that write-up. It’s ridiculous we’re reading that with two months to go though. I’m not worried about Retrograde yet given the production of the first single. The few Evans quotes are great; if he’s taking Ed’s first vocal takes in some cases then they are going for something completely different than the BOB shellacked shit on a plate.

RE: the Variety album rundown article-

It seems like the production of this album is something they're proud of. They wouldn't be debuting it to critics with ultra-good audio if they weren't very happy with it. We'll obviously have "rockers" and "anthem" attempts but I reckon the album as a whole will be sonically different from recent efforts.

Also, on the comments for Retrogade being like Sirens - remember that in the first takes of Lightning Bolt, Sirens was compared to Black and Swallowed Whole was compared to RVM. I'd say we just wait and see what it sounds like before we judge it.

Overall, it does seem like DotC is an outlier and not a new norm. I still have a lot of anticipation for the album and have a very open mind.

Could be. I have my own more personal interpretation of the song and I think that more than anything is what makes DOTC such a triumph: when was the last time we all had such a varied take on what a PJ song is really about and actually wanted to have a discussion about it? Ed’s always had an ability to take universal ideas and make them personal to the listener. We relate to what he’s feeling even if we don’t exactly know what he’s singing about. I don’t really pick up anything overtly political here like some people do. To me it’s more about being stuck in the past and missing what’s in front of you right now. I am a sentimental guy who’s hung onto his share of forget me nots thinking they can still serve some purpose but all it’s doing is making me sad about people that aren’t around or an existence I’ve moved on from.

I could be wrong but trag drew attention to something I wrote that might have been construed as grammatical laziness or a misspelling and I replied in what was intended as an “aw shucks you folks are great” kinda way. Privately I was proud of my past tense usage of shellac.
