That "par for the course" comment in the Stereogum review was about the lyrics (good ones mixed with some clunkers) rather than the album as a whole. I don't think they gave a rating but theirs looks like the most positive review I've read so I'm thinking A- or maybe even an A.

RS gave it 4 stars, not sure if that is an A-?

Overall, my expectations are raised after reading these reviews. The most heartening thing is different people seem to prefer different songs. There's not a song someone hasn't praised by now.

This. Someone posted that stereogum’s review is “par for the course”...this is not true. He was speaking about a couple of songs that would still please some fans and were “par for the course” as far as PJ rockers go. Overall, they gave the new album a glowing review.

From what I gather reading the reviews so far [by the way, wtf did space dot com get an advance, and Stip got shit?] it sounds like Gigaton might be PJ's In Rainbows (and I'm just fine with that).

If that’s truly the case, then this would be PJs best album. In Rainbows is my favorite Radiohead album by far.

just the stereogum article and i like the notion of getting a new pj album and feeling something its off...they used to sound like that in first listens back in the day.

It was a essentially a clearinghouse of previously unreleased material, dating from various eras, which fans had heard in alternate incarnations for years prior.

We’re not comprise them musically; that’s certainly no comparison. Just comparing the left turn in musical style that an album like Kid A was for Radiohead, and wanting a similar left turn for Pearl Jam. PJ have not had a left turn album to the extent Radiohead has, but I’d say their closest two to that are No Code and Binaural.
