I thought Kapler's stint as Phillies manager was the worst managerial performance of my lifetime. It blew my mind that he was hired again. An analytics only manager for sure.

Farhan hired Kapler because there’s an understanding that Kapler wont veer from the analytical script. The computer sets the lineup. The computer decides when to make changes. There’s little or no consideration for the human element. They haven’t figured out that the analytical formula they play by doesn’t translate to their own brand of baseball because a) they don’t play their position players everyday, but the data used is compiled from stats of players who mostly played everyday and b) they don’t let pitchers know what their role is but the data used is compiled from stats of pitchers who did know their role most days.
Every sentence in my head, someone else has said.

Tim Wakefield was a legend. If I could wave a magic wand, I’d put him in the HOF, because tbat would guarantee that he’d be immortalized forever, but I am also convinced that those of us who were awake devotees will continue to tell stories and talk about his career for decades to come, helping to keep his memory alive in a more old-timey way, which is better than being in Cooperstown for Wake, who was a throwback in his own right.

He’s number 3 all-time in wins for the Red Sox, behind only Cy Young and Roger Clemens. Jesus Christ, huh? And he isn’t that far behind, either—Clemens and Young both had 192 wins, Wake had 186. He’s also 6th all time in pitching WAR, 1st in IP, 2nd in games pitched, 1st in games started, and 2nd in K. Also 1st in BB and HBP, of course.

He once pitched 10 innings in a game, throwing 172 pitches. He walked 10 and struck out only 1. He got the win.

I’ll never forget the day the Sox had to trade to get Doug Mirabelli back because no one could catch the knuckle ball, and he had to fly cross-country on a game day and got a police escort to the park while he changed into his uniform in the backseat. All because Wake needed a catcher.

I think if any other pitcher gave up the homer to Boone in ‘03, we never would have forgiven them. But it was Wake, so no big deal; get ‘em next time, tiger.

Basically, if you came of age watching the Red Sox in the ‘90s and ‘00s, you watched Wake pitch every 5 days (or more often). He was the team’s rock for almost 20 years, and getting that foundation ripped away hurts really bad today, but we’re going to keep his story alive for as long as we’re around.
