I can envision these songs fitting in with a more eclectic palette of material more than I envision them fitting in with six more songs in this kind of "post-Backspacer" mode--I just wonder what they're classifying as what, and how relative the descriptions are. If the remaining tracks are indeed a little darker in tone, a little more atmospheric (which initial reviews suggest might well be the case), I can imagine some of these current songs being elevated by the context.
I remember when I first listened to the leak (which is not in the order these songs appear on the album swallowed whole felt unnecessarily light at the end of 3 other fairly upbeat songs. Lighting Bolt may feel more earned following my father's son and siren. Swallowed Whole may feel more necessary following Infallible and Pendulum (have two pearl jam songs ever been expected to do so much heavy lifting?). Sequencing matters, since on an album songs are reacting to what came before

they sound like Bono and Ed
Well, the edge has a very distinctive voice as well. More than any of the musicians in pearl jam. Sometimes that works to their advantage and sometimes to their detriment.
It is telling that (as someone said a few pages ago) out of the 6 songs we've heard we have
a soaring stadium anthem
an REM acoustic song
a blues stomp
a so. cal punk number
whatever getaway reminds people of
an acoustic pop lullaby
all from the same band appearing on the same record. If the album ties them all together it'll feel like pearl jam. If it doesn't we'll see the cost of how they write songs these days. But this eclectism is nothing new, and one of the things that I think separated them from their peers (for better or worse). I'm not sure you could break down the recent albums by the pumpkins, AIC, or Soundgarden in quite the same way
Very well put I feep thinking Getaway is a Pub rock song I do not even no what that means.

PJ should make a "WAND ERECTION" T-shirt to market their new image.

So it seems like SW is rising up in people's rankings of the new songs? If so I'm really glad to see that. Its so pretty. God damn I wish that 2:05 bridge area was longer. Maybe they will jam this out live?

I was hoping they'd jam out the ending of MFC, but...

Talk of crucifix reminds me of cruciforms.
I'd put one on BoB. Or two.

i'm afraid that's a loooooooooong read...
It's from the novel "Hyperion" by Dan Simmons.
Probably the last great space opera in modern literature.

I picture that turning into an RVM clusterfuck jam, but then again I'm all for anything that features Stone soloing.

Just as an experiment:
I'd like to see Matt, Stone, Jeff and Ed each write a solo album (all music and lyrics). And then bring in the rest of Pearl Jam as a backing/session band on the album. Release each album under their individual name, as solo records, and just see what they sound like. See which one is the best.
