There needs to be somewhere in the middle of those two things.

You've made sweeping statements like this before regarding the President's popularity without being able to point to any empirical evidence that demonstrates a clear trend in support changing in any significant way--his popularity has been stagnant at somewhere between 41-42.5% for months and months (with the only noticeable blip being a blip downward to below 40% during the federal government shutdown about a year ago). Contrary to what you say here, the reaction to the impeachment probe has basically split along the lines of the President's popularity--which, of course, you could argue is not good for the Democratic leadership that's pushing the probe, because they're not changing anyone's mind, it seems, at least at this stage. Could you link us to some of the studies that have persuaded you and led you to your conclusions?

Support for impeachment among independents was floating around 35% before hearings started. What does polling from December say so far?

I’m familiar with this “Democrats are so full of hate! Oh how I hate them for their endless hate!” zealotry. Every grievance you don’t share must be faked. Every political ambition you oppose must be secretly corrupted. Every policy idea you dislike must be a scheme. When you feel anger towards others, it is legitimate. When others feel anger towards your political teammates, it is unhinged bitterness. Every fear you don’t share is just a manipulative posture. You look at people whose values and desires are different from you and can’t see anything but hate. And in that righteousness, you are able to recognize the falseness of any evidence to the contrary.

There’s a lot of this attitude in the place where I grew up, and my experience is that the people who enter into it often have very little trouble reaching the next logical step: when I hurt you, it is justified.

The thing of it is, if Obama or Biden or Clinton or any other despicable democrat had been the one to ask Ukraine for “favors”, the Republicans would already have them out of office. So, to say the impeachment proceedings aren’t “nonsense”. The Republicans will be setting a very, VERY dangerous precedent when they acquit him in the Senate. They will be telling the world that it’s ok for the President to leverage anyone in order to gain personal political favors. It’s not good in this case and it wouldn’t be good if it was a Democrat in the hot seat right now.
