This may have been mentioned already in the 50-odd pages of this thread I haven't read, but I think this is more a song about harassment of a stranger than unrequited love.

There's nothing in the lyrics to suggest he ever had any kind of connection/relationship with the object of his obsession, but rather saw her from afar and developed an infatuation ("singin' in the distance").

The only reference to any interaction between them is that she punched him ("hoping that I hurt your fist") and that he is now locked up ("prisoner of keys and cuffs / fortunate to be locked up")

I think he possibly has mental/developmental issues ("a life of hopelessness, focus on your focusedness") and there is confusion over whether he is aware that approaching the woman is inappropriate ("right now I feel, a lack of innocence searching for reveal") or he simply wants to take what he sees as rightfully his ("could be the one", "I'm feeling selfish and I want what's right").

It might be a stretch, but "Once you were somewhere, and now you're everywhere" could refer to the story being in the news (Headline: "Woman punches would-be rapist").

Thoughts?

Yup, tried that. Woke up the next morning after it dropped, and hated it less. There's FLASHES of parts that I kinda like you know? You're right, holding hope for the album and it's just a dud.

it's been hard for me to like PJ songs since Vitalogy, I'm still here because they usually grew on me

some songs yeah other are instant love. You have a song like Do The Evolution that I remember going nuts for when I first saw the video. Then there's the entirety of Avocado which maybe took me a few years to appreciate. Or a song like Who You Are that I dont really like til this day lol

I remember *hating* the vocal style of DTE when I first heard it, like "why can't he sing NORMALLY anymore?" it's weird that I'd already started to feel he sounded old and tired by then

Both Habit and DTE were scary first listens because I thought Eddie had totally killed his voice.

I can get on board with this. Could be some leftover thoughts/lyrics from when Ed had a stalker. Maybe none of those thoughts/words were ever fully fleshed out.

yeah - I want to wait for official lyrics before I delve too much more deeply into this but this is totally plausible. The main character knows, to a point, that they are being entitled and ridiculous - they just can't help themselves. It's why I steer away from the grief read, at least for now.

It COULD be that this would be like Evacuation being the a single. Probably would have hated it when listening on its own, especially knowing it was coming for a couple of weeks, but it's fine and even enjoyable when i listen to Binaural.

I just want to make the request that people stop using the word cringe and any of its variants (especially the dreaded cringe worthy) to describe hearing music they don't like. No one should be cringing. Also, almost everyone is using it wrong.

Solid thought. It took me a long time to warm to Evacuation, so, yeah, if I'd gotten that after NAIS... I can see some similarity here.

yes! completely; I thought he was gonna hack-cough himself to death

he doesn't bellow like he could once, even then; what he does is restrain his screams so that they don't tear up his vocal chords, like he does here

I'm not putting money on it but this is my feeling too

there should be five more versions of the video where they gradually replace each member of the band + some of the background with a live-action version, the last one being completely live.
