I remember the first few eps of Season 4 as the worst stretch of the series. With Skylar trying to buy the car wash, and Walt just going along with all her dumb ideas. The season eventually found its footing and ended well, but the beginning was rough.

i agree on the assassins and the skylar plotlines, but in the grand scheme of the show it really doesn't affect my overall opinion

I really hated the third episode of the fourth season:
The Argonaut wrote:What the hell was that episode?
They took the least interesting of the few things that are going on in this show and focused an entire episode on it. Walt and Skylar buying the car wash is not interesting at all. It's not possible to make it interesting. The stakes are too low. Oh, you can't buy the car wash? Then you buy the nail salon or the laser tag or anything else. No one dies, nothing happens. The worst part is that the writers realize this is so low-stakes that they have to rationalize spending an entire episode on Skylar's obsession with the car wash by having Walt take a stupid second-hand Bogdan comment personally.
The other dumb thing about this whole car wash thing is that Skylar was able to very easily assess the entire worth of the business at 829,000 dollars by sitting in an adjacent parking lot for what-3 afternoons? And yet they think that they can hide $15mil+ a year in this business? That is ridiculous.
Also, the show seems to be a little confused about the White family finances. They had Saul help them make up a story about Walt's gambling, which is how they're supposedly getting away with spending so much on the car wash, but they also have to pretend that they're broke? Someone is confused.
This episode was so bad it resulted in the only bad acting I've ever seen from Bryan Cranston on this show. The scene where he's telling Skylar to give up on the phone calls from Bogdan was mildly painful.

The only good thing about this episode was seeing Jesse in the pits of hell that is his home. And even that can't last much longer. This season needs to get its shit together, focus on something interesting, and ALLOW SOMETHING TO ACTUALLY HAPPEN.

Last night's SNL with Tracy Morgan. Pretty good one with not unexpected cameos.

Tonight is an insane TV night. Here's a list of what I want to see tonight:

Sports:
MLB Playoffs
Pats vs. Colts
Wild Hockey Game
T'Wolves Pre-season game

New Episodes of:
The Simpsons
Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Bob's Burgers
The Last Man on Earth

I've already watched the Viking win, and the crazy ends to the Panthers/Seahawks & packers/Chargers games. Hell of a Sunday!

The Argonaut wrote:The whole plane crash thing spoils season two in my mind. It didn't need to be such a huge consequence. Walt's decision to let Jane die was bad enough. And I found the season-long tease to the airplane thing to be nothing more than a gimmick. It's stuff like this and a lot of what they do with Skylar in the later seasons that kept BB from being counted among the best shows. Too many major missteps to reach that highest level.

Season 3 ending through until the penultimate episode of S4 is outstanding. The finale of 4 through the first 2 episodes of S5 are hit/miss leaning toward MAGNETS BITCH! (gross)

Then most of S5 is fucking great.

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Loved the S2 premier. It's got such a cool, distinct vibe, totally different from S1. The filters and large film grain (which are both probably digital effects these days) remind me a lot of Buffalo '66. Love the tension from the premier -- a lot of dark simmering in this sleepy town. Jesse Plemons is always great, and I think Kirsten Dunst is playing the daffy housewife perfectly.

Plus, this season has
Spoiler: show
a UFO!
which is so weird and out of left field.

Keith Gordon was a guest on The New Hollywood recently, and he got me even more excited for this season:

So yes, very excited to watch Ep2 when I get home tonight.

The absolute .... what... strangeness? ... of this season is so compelling. If this season goes as well (at least) as S1, I'm ready to start talking about it in terms of the "best" lists.

I've heard The Leftovers are off to a really good start too. I waivered on it last season; I'll revisit but there's just so much good stuff out there now that I can't watch it all.
And I just finished S1 of The Wire, not sure when I'll start S2.

The Fall is fucking brilliant. I can't wait for S3!

Also, Gillian Anderson is totally underrated. She's masterful. What a gift she has.

Still looking forward to The League being done. I seriously don't think I have laughed once this season. Well, at anything besides Rafi, anyway.

I watched the first three episodes of the grinder yesterday. It was surprisingly very funny. I'm definitely in for the season.

Agreed. I just started season 2 of this. Really great show. She's fantastic. I like that they've kept the first 2 seasons at only 5 eps each too.

It's really a much better model for dramatic TV. Even 13 episodes per season is a stretch sometimes.
