From the same curmudgeons who moan about the new stuff. I did not go ape shit over those two songs and I've only listened to them about three times, in spite of the fact I like them. I don't like them as much as I like these. CC is actually incredibly boring until halfway through. You loved them because they represented old PJ, and all the same people who loved them for that reason, hate this stuff. It's nothing short of predictable.
And you also like Everything by NIN. Nothing against you, or Stip, ect. But I've been around this forum long enough to know if certain people are really excited i'm probably not going to be that into it.

"Old Pj"

those tracks were from 2 albums ago and from a period where most people hate....and consider standard modern Pearl Jam.

Those songs take chances....
It was 7 years ago, at least. Not vintage PJ but old? Yeah. CC takes chances? It takes the chance of changing to a new chord structure half way through, like 'Fatal' did, if that's what you mean.

It takes chances in that it doesnt confine to the standard verse/chorus shit that they commit to now. it's not a "hey look at me ! look how great i am!" kind of a song... I dig that.

Maybe people just don't like these songs. Maybe there's not this weird bias that's coloring their approach to new material. Sometimes the easiest explanation is the right one.
Right, so it would be really nice if people were saying that, rather than saying "Obviously if poster X,Y and Z aren't liking the songs, I won't fucking them either. Look at the schmucks who like the songs, I mean PJ have lost it, why can't these idiots see that?" Is this the easiest explanation, that PJ has just finished and everyone else who likes their stuff is just a twat?

The first half of the album is more catchy and instant, but the second half has more of the slow-burning rewards. And yes that song might be the best on the album.

I get the disappointment with the new material, although I myself am not one of those that are displeased with the stuff we have heard thus far

I am listening to W.M.A. right now - that song is so unique! You have this funky drum part going on with these really awesome vocals from Ed. All in all it was very experimental and it provided this unique sound scape. Nowadays PJ really doesn't do much that expands beyond power chord rockers or acoustic ballady stuff. I still dig the material, but I don't get why they don't want to incorporate more experimental stuff in there nowadays

I also conclude that they need more guitar riffage! Alone, Even Flow, Animal, etc. all had singable guitar parts instead of just power chords. That is why I think many people love Of The Earth

But all in all I enjoy the new material a lot so its all good

Said what? No one said that PJ were over, RIP Pearl Jam, I'm going to decide which posters' opinions are trustworthy enough to assimilate into mine?

It's not even the production really. It's the way they've chosen to interpret 'fun' or 'happy' or 'poppy' . Mym just came on and I was thinking wow this is kicking my ass maybe I was too harsh on it before, and then that fucking metaphysically redeemed part kicked in and reminded me why. Just bleh.
God damn it, stop hating my favorite parts of these fuckings songs

I don't want to go down a long road on this, so all I'll say is that while talking PJ's music is interesting, talking about the biases that stop people from liking new PJ stuff, whether it's not like pop music or not liking the band at all or thinking they're experimental when they never were, or any of that, sounds boring. It's come up a lot here in the past few years and it's way more annoying that someone feeling negative about new material, to me at least. And this is coming from someone who finds a lot to like in the new stuff.

It's not fair on any song to judge it on that basis. Just because people you usually disagree with like something, means you won't like it? Without having heard it? C'mon
