I wouldn't show anyone CC or LIR as proof either. In fact I wouldn't show them anything after Yield, no matter how much *I* continued to love it.

Hey guys there's this movie coming out but because some friends say it's crap and the previously-good director has recently made a few movies I'm not a fan of I've decided I'm gonna to state i hate it at every opportunity, ok?

Maybe people just don't like these songs. Maybe there's not this weird bias that's coloring their approach to new material. Sometimes the easiest explanation is the right one.
Right, so it would be really nice if people were saying that, rather than saying "Obviously if poster X,Y and Z aren't liking the songs, I won't fucking them either. Look at the schmucks who like the songs, I mean PJ have lost it, why can't these idiots see that?" Is this the easiest explanation, that PJ has just finished and everyone else who likes their stuff is just a twat?
It's a good thing that no one said that then.
I might about a month from now.
Yeah I guess if you're going to be shat on for saying it you might just as well actually say it.

You're something, aren't you. No one's been shat on for saying they hated the new songs. Nobody.
Say you hate them before you heard them and get ready to be ridiculed - and rightly so.
Yeah, and again, no one has said such a thing, so why are we even having this discussion?
sure, sure

To claim that someone has said something, you need to be using direct quotes or it's moot.

The only person who seems to share all of my opinions about music and PJ is Mike, and he's pretty much only just arrived. If I'd been stacking up "friends" based on their opinions on PJ I probably wouldn't have any, frankly.

From the same curmudgeons who moan about the new stuff. I did not go ape shit over those two songs and I've only listened to them about three times, in spite of the fact I like them. I don't like them as much as I like these. CC is actually incredibly boring until halfway through. You loved them because they represented old PJ, and all the same people who loved them for that reason, hate this stuff. It's nothing short of predictable.
"Old Pj"
those tracks were from 2 albums ago and from a period where most people hate....and consider standard modern Pearl Jam.
Those songs take chances....
Let It Ride seemed like a pretty standard pearl jam song. All pretty familiar and readily identifiable parts.
The idea that CC "takes chances" is laughable, imo.
It sounds much more brave to me than say, The Fixer. Unless you view the band releasing such an obviously cringe worthy song "brave"

I don't want to go down a long road on this, so all I'll say is that while talking PJ's music is interesting, talking about the biases that stop people from liking new PJ stuff, whether it's not like pop music or not liking the band at all or thinking they're experimental when they never were, or any of that, sounds boring. It's come up a lot here in the past few years and it's way more annoying that someone feeling negative about new material, to me at least. And this is coming from someone who finds a lot to like in the new stuff.
It is (and I'm certainly guilty of starting some of those conversations). But as someone who does like the majority of newer era stuff it is also frustrating to talk about it on a forum where there is an aggressive and persistent block of posters who spend a lot of time disliking songs and trying to establish that people who do like them are stupid, have shitty tastes, are too easily pleased, etc. It shifts a conversation away from the pros and cons of the music (and discussions about WHY you don't like something are almost always interesting and entertaining and enlightening) and make it about the listener instead. So it's not uprising that people get defensive when an opinion about music becomes an attack on someone's character.

Pretty much everyone here exaggerates the "immaturity" of the early period, and the "genius" of the middle period.

Because the only two songs in the world are CC ("brave") or The Fixer ("not brave"), right? CC is a fuck ton better than The Fixer, but so is a smack in the face on some days.

I don't know what 'takes chances' means, but I think it's a pretty interesting song (a long 5 minute piece with no real breaks, choruses, etc) that doesn't have many similar songs in the catalog. Plus it has excellent lyrics and arguably the best vocal performance Eddie has turned in for well over a decade (shit, I might go all the way back to Vitalogy).
I wouldn't say anything like that about Let It Ride. I hear in Let it Ride what some people are criticizing these new songs about. I get why people like it, but I'm not feeling it.

They're both fairly standard rock songs. But they both have a grainy, unpolished and 'live-sounding' atmosphere and a dynamic sound, and the forum found both of them to be a breath of fresh air because Brendan O'Brien hadn't been anywhere near them with his lasers. These aspects alone are going to be wildly deceiving for RM at this point. It's like seeing an old, seriously hot girlfriend in the street despite the fact you've been married for ten years and, in theory, still love your wife.
