those tracks were from 2 albums ago and from a period where most people hate....and consider standard modern Pearl Jam.
Those songs take chances....
I wouldn't say anything like that about Let It Ride. I hear in Let it Ride what some people are criticizing these new songs about. I get why people like it, but I'm not feeling it.
Some of us aren't really the cheating type, I guess. We're OK with where we are. Which isn't virtuous or anything, different strokes for different folks.verb_to_trust wrote:This totallyharmless wrote:They're both fairly standard rock songs. And from reading people's reactions to the leak we just rolled over in bed and realized the homely wife who has "gained a few" is still who we fell asleep next to last night.
Yup. They would've been another two fillers on an album half-full of fillers, imo.stip wrote:I guess I just don't hear the dynamism on Let it Ride. I am willing to accept that it's just me since it is so overwhelmingly appreciated, but I don't hear anything new or particularly interesting, and I think Eddie's performance in it is kinda boring.
not CC. If done properly it's a fucking gem.harmless wrote:Yup. The negavitiy you speak of is even more exaggerated this time than it usually is. Come on it's normal that if I heard a song before you, and I loved it, knowing our taste don't overlap much you'd be less enthusiastic than if it were, I don't know, whoever has a taste that matches yours better. No one said you were stupid for liking these songs, stop using that argument.stip wrote:digster wrote:I don't want to go down a long road on this, so all I'll say is that while talking PJ's music is interesting, talking about the biases that stop people from liking new PJ stuff, whether it's not like pop music or not liking the band at all or thinking they're experimental when they never were, or any of that, sounds boring. It's come up a lot here in the past few years and it's way more annoying that someone feeling negative about new material, to me at least. And this is coming from someone who finds a lot to like in the new stuff.harmless wrote:Right, so it would be really nice if people were saying that, rather than saying "Obviously if poster X,Y and Z aren't liking the songs, I won't fucking them either. Look at the schmucks who like the songs, I mean PJ have lost it, why can't these idiots see that?" Is this the easiest explanation, that PJ has just finished and everyone else who likes their stuff is just a twat?digster wrote:Maybe people just don't like these songs. Maybe there's not this weird bias that's coloring their approach to new material. Sometimes the easiest explanation is the right one.harmless wrote: 'Just a rock band' isn't an insult unless you take it as one. They were absolutely a rock band, but they were a rock band we fucking loved and effectively sold our souls to.
It is (and I'm certainly guilty of starting some of those conversations). But as someone who does like the majority of newer era stuff it is also frustrating to talk about it on a forum where there is an aggressive and persistent block of posters who spend a lot of time disliking songs and trying to establish that people who do like them are stupid, have shitty tastes, are too easily pleased, etc. It shifts a conversation away from the pros and cons of the music (and discussions about WHY you don't like something are almost always interesting and entertaining and enlightening) and make it about the listener instead. So it's not uprising that people get defensive when an opinion about music becomes an attack on someone's character.
I would've restructured the shit out of it. Like OTE, it's got plenty of potential but it's a song idea rather than a song. That's just my opinion, of course; it has a beginning, middle and an end, so to all intents and purposes, it's finished. It's just... "half-assed" I guess.Lounge Lizard wrote:not CC. Like from this and conversations we've had in the past about stuff like ATW I know that our tastes in PJ are pretty different. When I heard CC and LiR I didn't think wow reminds me of 90s PJ I thought 'wow! Music I like!'. And unless BoB speed of sounded it I wouldn't care if he produced it. I replayed them about 50 timed the first few days I had them.harmless wrote:From the same curmudgeons who moan about the new stuff. I really enjoy new Pearl Jam songs period and will take them when I can them. If they as a band made epic albums like Tommy or something I would wait but they don't very often they are just a collection of songs. I can listen to each song in a vacum and then hear it in the context of a album and it is fine . I am really glad I got Cc and did not wait until Lost Dogs 2. I am really enjoying all four of these tracks .verb_to_trust wrote:I haven't listened to the leak. Maybe if it was obvious these songs were killer I would seek it out. I for one, feel like you guys are doing yourselves a pretty big disservice listening to a couple leaked tracks before the album is released in only a month.Lounge Lizard wrote:you need to rely so much on what other people say and think? Have your own opinion for fucks sake. You've made it your shtick that you have to hate it without even hearing it and seek support in every negative post you can find. This band has disappointed for about a decade now, if things were going to be different this time around, the early returns would be reading a lot differently one would think.
Again, if I end up liking the songs, I will gladly tell you guys all about it. But sometimes you can see the writing on the wall...

Cool, and that's a good thing. But I've probably listened to this 4-song leak around 100 times now, so my reaction is the same. And I still loved CC and LIR. I just love both sides of the coin, and I'm not asking for anything from PJ other than something I enjoy.stupidmop wrote:Idk I think its reasonable to see other peoples responses to a song and be able to get a feeling of whether you're gonna like it or not, especially if you generally know what the other posters feelings on various songs/ the band are.
It's not like he said Welp not even gonna bother listening to it when it comes out.
