Are they more outrageous if they're positive?

I just mean people saying they are better than established PJ songs after two days is outrageous. Not in bad way, just, outrageous.

I haven't really compared these songs to any past ones, I find it pointless. But comparing Matt's drum tone and playing to Riot Act more than Backspacer is easy.

Fuck tone.

(Fucktone. Great name for a band)

But yeah. His playing has finally found a place in Pj. Or they've made room for his playing.

Fuck tone? Tone is a massive part of what's put me off him as a drummer. Not everything, but important.

I agree on all accounts. I won't "compare" these to past songs. They are different and new. They were written by minds that have changed and grown and evolved throughout every album since ten. In some ways that is good and in some ways not so good but they are what they are and I judge them solely based on their own constructs....that being said. GETAWAY IS MY JAM BABY YEAH!! Maybe its the Agnostic in me....maybe its the music lover jamming out to the groovy rhythm of the track and the rockin buildup of it all. Maybe its eddies delivery of the lyrics...or the whole damn thing.

Is tone in drums where the snare sounds too right and sharp vs it being looser/relaxed?

His drumming has never been a issue I love it on alot of songs, but as much as I enjoy Backspacer I can not stand his snap and pop on that record this is more like his earlier tones which I like alot.
His tone on backspacer reminds me alot of Topper Headon's tone which I like when Topper is playing, but I like Matt's tone more reserved this fits the bill really well. I think he is playing really cool stuff in Swallowed Whole.

MC is in Pj 15 years and he's still the new guy. That's weird.

But on everything else, he's good. His drum tone and the feel of his playing (especially the "groove" he has found on Getaway) reminds me quite a lot of Riot Act. There's more "Can't Keep" in his playing than S/T or Backspacer, for sure. I don't think he's finally found a groove that works with PJ, he's got back a bit of what worked during Binaural and Riot Act.
