Jaeti wrote:"Hangman in dreamland about to call your name" is the peak of Seven O'Clock. And it's a six-star peak. I don't know how you can resolve a song/moment like that in a way that doesn't feel somehow lacking. But to me that's just a technicality.

I hear ya, but that would go against the vibe and ultimate message of the album.tragabigzanda wrote:I wish it resolved like Dead Man or NAIS, on a real foreboding vibe

Eh, this song just always rubbed me the wrong way in general, so wordy.

They just posted an empty stage with swirl colored screen as a back drop, maybe a video coming or new single,

All the ones past 5 minutes. 330-430 is their sweet spot on record.

This take is way too arbitrary for me. PJ has a number of great songs that are longer than 4:30.Aunt_Claire_Foy wrote:stip wrote:which longer songs make you nervous?

Not past Binaural. I can say that unequivocally the longer the songs are in these latter days, they are simply less to my liking. Here's a sampling, all songs I skip or terminate early:RockPusher wrote:This take is way too arbitrary for me. Infallible - 5:22
Sirens - 5:41
7 O'Clock - 6:24
Rivercross - 5:53
Comes then Goes - 6:02
Inside Job - 7:09
The only song I think I've liked after Binaural past the 5 minute mark is Who Ever Said, due largely to the loose jammy feel to it all. Everything on this list feels over engineered and way too wordy.

It runs about 6:30.tragabigzanda wrote:Inside Job isn’t really that long though, right? I don’t remember how long we have to wait for the Windows 95 startup sound
But yeah other than Infallible i like all those "long songs" to varying degrees. Especially the ones from Gigaton.
If anything for me the biggest "red flag" is the 3 minute song that appears on the back half of a modern Pearl Jam record.

I'm slightly concerned about it, yeah; I was encouraged by someone (I can't remember who) saying it was super heavy though, so if it's to be a punker, let's hope it's genuinely thrashy this timeRockPusher wrote:So “Running” is the bugaboo?Ms Harmless wrote:oof, yepThurman Murman wrote:It runs about 6:30.tragabigzanda wrote:Inside Job isn’t really that long though, right? Habit is my favorite of those tracks. I know a lot of you would be happy with a Lukin, STBC or Whipping analog, but those tracks always felt repetitive to me without much room for musical exploration. Blood is special because it brings the funk. Habit is special because it brings such ferocious guitars for the solo (kind of like Dark Matter in that regard). I have no idea what a sub-3 minute heavy song from PJ will sound like these days, but I’m hopeful it will have some real energy.

Re: Dark Matter: Official Album Thread
this kind of side 2 rocker has been with them from jump
Porch - track 8/11
Blood - track 7/12
Satan’s Bed - track 10/14
Habit - track 7 /13 or Lukin - track 9/13
MFC - track 9/13
Grievance - track 9/13
Get Right - track 9/15 or Green Disease - track 10/15
Big Wave - track 8/13
Supersonic - track 8/11
Swallowed Whole - track 8/12 or Let the Records Play - track 9/12
Never Destination - track 7/12 or Take the Long Way - track 8/12
it’s a well worn formula. Though Get Right, Big Wave, and Supersonic (maybe LTRP or Take the Long Way) are the only ones kind of structured to be light/disposable. The rest, even if they are light, are songs making statements
