Lewis - L'Amour



I just found out about this album today, and the premise of it sounded so absurd that I had to check it out. According to the story, this was a record originally released via private press in 1983. It obviously goes totally unnoticed. Flash-forward to about 2008 or so when some guy finds the record in an Edmonton flea market, falls in love with it, then finds another copy and passes it along to the collectors of obscuro music at Weird Canada. All that's known is that it is released under the name "Lewis," it has an album title, some strange liner notes, and a catalog number of R.A.W. 1001.

Over the years, a couple more copies appeared and it caught the attention of the label Light in the Attic Records. They did some digging and investigating because they were interested in resissuing the album. What they've found is that "Lewis" was allegedly a Canadian stock-broker who also went under the name Randall Wullf. He recorded the album in a cheap L.A. studio, drove a high-end car, and bounced a $250 check for the album's photo shoot. The label also got in contact with his nephew who revealed another pseudonym that the man worked under which allowed them to track his trail to another studio in Vancouver where he apparently recorded a handful of albums of "soft, religious music." He also reportedly made some recordings in Europe, but has essentially vanished otherwise. They also found a bunch of sealed copies in a Calgary record store that somehow allowed them to continue on with the reissue.

L'Amour was reissued earlier this year, and, oddly enough, a second album has appeared on eBay, apparently found in the warehouse of that same Calgary record store, titled Romantic Times and released under the name Lewis Baloue.

Anyway, as for the music itself, it's all gentle, hushed acoustic guitar, piano, and singing accompanied by a slightly odd synthesizer. Basically, it's like a more tuneful Jandek, with some touches of Mark Hollis for good measure.

Bleachers - Strange Desire album. A fun pop band my kid has gotten my into. He calls it noise pop.





Here's the full album. Generally it gets good reviews except the track with Yoko Ono on it.
