I think it's funny how Kazmir went from not being able to get a major league contract to 22 million in one year(that wasn't even that great of a year.)

I don't think it's an outrageous contract for Ellsbury given where the market is right now, but it's a terrible deal for the Yankees. Their entire problem is the back end of these long contracts biting them in the ass right now.

I don't think anyone was trusting Lackey, but that contract was already signed (and most Red Sox fans hated the deal when it was signed)...but at least Lackey had the excuse that he was hurt...Kazmir got racked in one game in which he lasted 1 2/3 innings in 2011 (hence the less than 2 innings in 2 years comment), and didn't pitch again until this past season...he wasn't hurt, he didn't have major elbow or shoulder surgery, everyone just assumed he was done, and his stats in independent leagues didn't necessarily refute that...

Well his mechanical issues were caused by injuries that he tried to pitch through for a couple of years. But the A's aren't signing this contract based on some independent league stats. They're basing it on a very good 2013 where he was a lot like the pitcher he was with the Rays.

Yeah, and I think a lot of GMs would have passed on him because of the uncertainty for the price. He was decent in 2009, bad in 2010, pitched a combined 2 innings in 2011 and 2012, then bounced back in 2013. That's a pretty iffy recent track record to be betting $22 million on. I know they don't really compare as players, but this is similar to the Jays Navarro signing. He's been really good in the past, followed that up by being bad for a few years, and recently bounced back. The risk is lower for the Jays because of the money involved (and they just need him to be better than the JP Arencibia, which is about as low as the bar can go), but both teams are betting that the rebound is sustainable.
