Well, would you say they've just established new norms? I would. What song "fits" the blueprint most out of these five? If the answer is none, then what you're wanting them to fit is an old blueprint, not one that PJ are currently setting for themselves. Is there a new "norm" you could look for? I guess I see one in "enjoyable contemporary-yet-classic rock music". That's enough for me. I'll always hear a classic rock band using tried and tested grunge / alternative-rock influences and flourishes. But when they're feeling happier, those influences will be more 'palatable'.
Harm, the problem is that with each new response you are describing some other band I'm not interested in.

I'm OK with naming this band Pearl Jam because this band is called Pearl Jam. Same five guys doing what they want to do. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I think it's bullshit... same as always.

I have LB playing in my headphones now and it's pretty good. I haven't heard U2 do anything as inspired in a long time.

Lounge, listen to the other tracks before you've decided Pearl Jam are dead. We have the logical extension of Backspacer but it's only 4/5 songs so far.
And I don't know how "completely honest" you want me to be. I love Pearl Jam. I don't always *enjoy* Pearl Jam. I didn't often, or even usually, love an album on first listen. I'm very used to having to grow into PJ songs. In that sense, I'm now wondering whether I liked them less than a lot of people here. I can cope with PJ playing pop music because that's where I am in my life at the moment. It's obviously where they are too. I expect some songs that I like from Pearl Jam, nothing else. I like these ones. Nothing will ever stand the same test of time their first 7 albums have. But that's OK.

I need a Jeff or stone interview. I feel like they'd be the least likely to be down with all this pop nonsense (i made this up based on nothing). Jeff needs to lock bob in a box, and egg eds house, get him good and cranky again.
