wease wrote:Rough day today. Due to a meeting, I was up at 4:15. Had a pretty shitty work morning. Picked up in the afternoon a bit but on the drive home, Mrs Wease called me and I could hear the youngest weaseling in the background in hysterics. They weren’t together so I don’t know if it was conference or what. Weaseling has a bad flat tire. Ok, I’ll check it when I get back into town. So, she and her car are at her work and I plan on going straight there. Well, she got fired for being on her cell phone during a shift the other day. One of her other workers told on her. No, she shouldn’t have been on it, but all she did was answer a text from her mother. She had it out for literally 5-10 seconds. But, against the rules, so… Her supervisor told her how great a worker she is, how she always comes in early, stays late if they ask, picks up shifts when they need her to, always cleans… Just an all around great worker. But, she had to let her go.
I get to her car and there’s a 2”x2” chunk torn out of her tire. Im like WTF?!? She told her mother she ran over a rock. So she then sends us a pic of the rock. It’s a fucking boulder. It’s 3’ long x 2’ tall x 2’ deep. It’s like the fucking Excalibur stone. And she ran over it. I get it changed with the bicycle spare and that’s flat too. I mean, it has air in it but I couldn’t tell it wasn’t enough until the weight of the car was on it. Flat. So we have some friends bring their air compressor and we fill it up and I drive it to the tire shop so they can put a new one on it tomorrow. Hopefully the wheel isn’t warped from her driving over the rock of Gibraltar.
holy shit man
glad she is safe / OK
a rock that big could do some serious damage

I think you only have two choices here: Pull her license or send her to a detention center

Firing someone for looking at their phone briefly is deranged. Is there something extenuating about the job that requires that kind of hardline severity? What the hell

It’s apparently part of this place’s code of ethics to not be on their cellphones.
Just found out the kid that ratted her out is on her phone constantly and told the boss about our kid because she sucks up to the boss and tries to make it where she’s the favorite.

I agree 100% This sounds personal if anything...
I would say the young Weasling should not take this too hard. It's not fair and not her fault.

what is the job?
is it something where people can leave bad reviews of interactions of certain people on the company's website/social media?

It is not. Well, I’m sure people can post reviews and such, but I don’t think anything is review-driven. It’s at our YMCA. She worked with all the little kids like after school and weekends and summer-winter-fall-spring break camps and stuff. Sometimes she’d have to man the check-in desk. Her job is done almost exclusively by high school kids (maybe a couple of early college) and it has been a transformative position for her. She has planned her life’s trajectory around working with small kids pretty much based on the last two years at this job. That’s the part that pisses me off so much. They have this one kid that absolutely LOVES her job and by their own admission, does it very well, so well they tell her they wish more of their employees were like her, and then based on some other little fuck worker reporting her for being on her phone, they “have” to let her go. But they’ll give her a great recommendation. Fuck you assholes. And the thing is all those little kids absolutely adore her. And their parents love her. She’s been invited to birthday parties for these little 5-year-olds because they love her so much. I know she’s my kid and I’m biased but for what that job entails, there aren’t many that can flourish like she has in it.
And this doesn’t even consider my anger for the mandatory tithing employees have to do to work there.

Spineless supervisor, probably for the best in the long run. There’s leeway with such a rule, especially when it’s a good employee, supe just didn’t want to go up the chain etc.

Tangential question: How long til they end up re-branding it from the YMCA to the YPCA?
