I just listened again and it still feels half-assed and boring to me but I love that you guys love it, so I've stopped talking about it here. Except now... but only because you asked

The last 2 mins of this song could play on a loop in my head forever and it would be fine.

I just played it in reverse and during the layered vocal part Ed sounds like he's saying something about "my nips and toes"

of course

genius strikes again

this is all part of the Dance

we are being instructed to dance on our toes and rub our nips, as a symbol of Christ’s never-ending compassion

we are but ants among giants

My five-year-old knows half of the lyrics now. It's on anytime in the car. :D

I dont care what ed says, he didnt write gtf strictly about himself or anything other than jesus who some amazingly love to flame . With the inclusion of lyrics like "beaten and stabbed" he obviously knew a lot of listeners would immediately think of a jesus refference. Again, read the lyrics of push me pull me and other songs if you think ed never gives thought to a god and spirituality regarding lyrics. Give your hate of the innocent a rest?

Christ imagery is pretty common throughout art for one who makes a sacrifice/martyrs themselves. That doesn't make it about Jesus though

real talk: GTF is practically a line-by-line about the story of Jesus (‘Given to Fly’ itself a reference to the Ascension), which Ed is probably paralleling with his personal life story and equally important role in the course of human history

and now DOTC will rekindle this generation’s lost faith in christian theocracy as a viable form of social order

Had the occasion to listen to this thing full blast three times in a row in my car with rad Bose speakers (brag) and I think I love it more than ever.

Exactly, but if Ed is successful, there might be soon

I hadnt listened to gtf in a long time, so i was incorrect about the beaten part but yeah that imagery is definitely there including the order of the events:

But first he was stripped and then he was stabbed
By faceless men

But its this line that carries the most weight for 1 (of most likely 2 intended) of the interpretations being about jesus, imo: "The love he receives is the love that is saved". Ed once spit in a guys face when the guy told him "your my savior" and lectured him on the matter, so it doesn't seem like something he would write about himself and who else would he write it about? Anyway, my point is i believe ed intended the lyrics to be interpreted a couple of ways to fit a varied audience and i believe 1 of them was the story of the crucifixion. Even knowing how the lyrics would be interpreted is part of the intentions behind them.

and you forgot that Jesus used to hang out with fishermen and talk about love and Ed makes a reference to making it to the ocean so he's clearly drawing a parallel
