I still can't quite believe James Iha rejoined the band.

I've been listening to the Pisces Iscariot deluxe extras a whole bunch. I must've listened to the original a hundred times, so it still feels crazy to me that I get all of this goodness from the vault with as little as a Spotifiy account.

What a time to be alive. For digital extras. Everything else is pretty meh right now, admittedly.

yeah, it also reminds me how difficult and expensive was back in the day. But i also had this moment of discovery, of treasure, of attention that this era doesnt have.

You win, you lose i guess.

Of last nights show, Quiet was the best song they played. I just wasn’t into it. Could be we were significantly further back than with Pearl Jam the night before, though I don’t think so because we were in the same spot for Billy Idol and weirdly enjoyed that set quite a bit.

I am in the middle of Machina II. I haven’t given up yet despite not being that enthused with their set. I think it was a matter of setting. I would think they’d sound great in an arena with the sound bouncing off the walls…but a weekend of killer blues, soul, rock, and Pearl Jam, closing out with the Pumpkins was just a weird fit - especially with the sea and sand as our backdrop. I could be convinced to see them somewhere like Barclays Center.

Or The Metro in Chicago. That's the dream.

Machina II / Friends and Enemies of Modern Music

Admittedly, I walked into this one in a tough space - I didn’t think I would enjoy it on the heels of some descriptions here along with the sort of disjointed concert experience from the weekend. However, be it alternative versions of songs on Machina or other songs included, this mostly worked. It continues that heavier and industrial sound they were going for in Part I, but it was the more stripped down moments that made this one for me. Try and Home were standouts for me, and the heavier Slow Dawn, Vanity and Saturnine were also very enjoyable. Dross also - and In My Body seems to have the bones of a great song that needed fleshing out. Sadly, I usually try to give my thoughts contemporaneously but have had a hell of a few days. In any event, the Pumpkins are hopefully marching on for me.

I should listen to those songs again sometime.

I remember i liked Try way more than the Machina version.

Zeitgeist

The Smashing Pumpkins return after a hiatus for this one. For the most part, this is a louder and less remarkable album than their previous efforts. The big guitars seem to mostly run together on this, though admittedly Chamberlin sounds great on this album and really seems to carry them along. It’s only on United States, That’s the Way (My Love Is), For God and Country, and perhaps Bring the Light where you see the shades of Pumpkins old. Tarantula is pretty good for a big rock song and all. I did not like Starz which I recall being the song that would often bring me to turn this one off in the past. All in all, not the worst effort but Billy and Co. are capable of much more than this.

Zeitgeist is a personal favorite...maybe because i was super exited about it, maybe because i was working at an ad agency at the time and i could listen to whatever i wanted full volume...not sure.

Doomsday Clock is such a badass way to start an album.
