Re: Unpopular Music Opinions
I saw Live after secret samadhi came out. The only memorable thing from the show was when I accidentally spilled a beer on a girl sitting in front of me.

Thanks for also pointing out that women’s day is ... racially motivated somehow?epilogue wrote:But to answer your disingenuous question, I'd say the best way to celebrate and honor women on international women's day is to platform and follow women of color. Buy their products, books, art, etc. Shop at their stores. Support their work. Support their candidacies for office. And don't be cruel.

I've got my own unpopular Beck opinion; The Information is his best record.

I gotta say, that is a super hot take.digster wrote:I've got my own unpopular Beck opinion; The Information is his best record.
Though probably not any more or less so than mine: Modern Guilt is his best.

Re: Unpopular Music Opinions
I like Beck. He's got some songs that really hit the spot. But I don't find myself compelled to listen to full Beck albums often anymore. And as time goes on I probably lean more toward your take. I don't think I'll ever hate him or think he's no good. But he's not some musical messiah or revolutionary.Mickey wrote:Beck isn't good at all.
I also think that thing people accuse Annie Clark of that rubs them the wrong way? I think I feel that way about Beck at times.

They’re both just trying to be David Bowie.

Re: Unpopular Music Opinions
As I see it, the difference between Annie and Beck is that Annie has never presented St. Vincent as her authentic self. At least, not that I've seen -- or rather, not to a degree that feels like a con or disingenuous. She's constantly in character and she's always up front about that. Who her character is changes with each album. Each album is a play. And Annie is cast as a different lead in each new play. It doesn't come across as forced quirkiness to me. It's theater.
In interviews when she drops the latest St. Vincent character and lets Annie talk, she comes across as intelligent, thoughtful, curious, and nerdy in an endlessly endearing way. At least to me. She's guarded and protected, sure, but I can relate to that too. And I don't have the added pressures/problems of being a public figure. Or an attractive woman in an historically dangerous, masculine space.
