Considering just pure athletic ability and baseball IQ. Speed, power, eye at the plate… I guess his defense and arm maybe weren’t top tier.

I’m biased because he’s my favorite, but if you look at all of his offensive stats, it’s hard to argue he’s not at least top five.

I also forgot that he was on second base when Carter hit his famous home run in Toronto

I can’t quite get there but he’s underrated despite being in the HOF. First all time in runs, stolen bases and unintentional walks but he usually isn’t mentioned in the conversation of the greatest players ever. He’s never really been part of the PED debate but if I had to guess, I’d say he took them.

I can't find it now, but one of my very favorite 90's TV things to watch was an ESPN Rickey Henderson highlight reel set to Mili Vanilli's "Keep On Running".

I remember that year that he won the WS with Toronto, during the ALCS (I forget who the other team was), Rickey would get on base and yell to the pitcher and the infield that he was going to steal and there was nothing they could do about it. He stole second, then like one out later stole third. Man he was fun as hell to watch. Early on in their careers, Vince Coleman and Tim Raines would get pissed at his cockiness, but I remember seeing interviews with them later on about how he had every right to be that way.

This may only be interesting to Matters, but I saw today that Verlander is older than both Lincecum and Cain. That doesn't feel remotely correct to me, but it indeed is true.

I saw that he’s older than Lincecum and it shook my head for a minute but then I realized it makes sense. Verlander debuted in 2005!
