the thing about songs with more prominent hooks and melodies is that even if they aren't my favorites they won't feel like work to listen to, and a lot of the other 3 star songs in the catalog just get skipped after a while because, unless I haven't heard it in a while and want to revisit it, it kinda feels like work to listen and that's time I could be listening to something else.

If Pearl Jam writes a great song I'd probably (usually) rather it be a bit darker and serious, or have the dramatic cathartic sweep that something like lightning bolt has (if you had told me after the first time I heard the wrigley version I would be in love with the studio track I never would have believed you), because the extra gravity elevates the song. So I am still expecting/hoping that something like Pendulum or Infallible will be my favorite song on the record. But if it's going to be one of the 'pretty good' songs that I put towards the bottom of an album I'd rather they sound like this.

I think Backspacer has a bunch of really strong songs (GSMF and Force of Nature are my favorites) but what is so appealing about that record is that really nothing is a chore to listen to. Other than the 4-5 songs that I love on each record Binaural and Riot Act feel like work.

I like the (apparent) intention behind this record quite a bit, but there are so many artists out there you have accomplished it far more effectively.

There are artists who have accomplished everything Pearl Jam does more effectively. But they don't sound like Pearl Jam so I don't like them as much.

Your current shtick aside, is there any chance you could like this album? Or any forthcoming pearl jam album at this point in your life?

Current schtick aside, I could certainly end up liking some songs on this record. None of the ones we've heard so far move or reach me in any way, though only one really "offends," as they say. They are catchy, hummable, but ultimately unengaging emotionally. I listen to them and I sing and I nod my head and I feel absolutely nothing, and I have a hard time recalling them aside from the basic hook, when it's done.

The saddest thing of the post Riot Act era, for me, is that this was the one truly successful band from the last set of decades that seemed to be locked into the essence of rock's ragged glory. Now they seem as far removed from it as they can get without redefining their entire approach.

True story: Mick Jagger was just entering his mid-30's the first time the Rolling Stones were called dinosaurs, and was barely 40 when the announcement of a new tour led to the band being termed the Strolling Bones. Now, that's some silly shit.
