Heard this stat from Sean McAdam this AM: During the road trip, the Sox averaged 7 1/2 runs in each defeat. Ridiculous.
They need at least one starter and one more bullpen arm...and honestly, they could really use two bullpen arms, because I'm not trusting Koji at all, even if we do get one more arm to replace Smith.

Never thought I'd say it, but I'd be ok with them trading for Shields at this point...as long as they can unload a bad contract and don't have to include any real prospect of value.
Why would SD trade him if you were unloading a bad contract on them and not giving them a prospect of value? They aren't getting salary relief or a roster improvement.
There was the Sandoval rumor back in spring training, and that was supposedly going to be straight up...one bad contract for another

What about Hanley for Shields? Hanley's contract sucks but it's shorter term so San Diego saves money in the long term.

I like the idea of acquiring Shields, but given his shitty contract, I don't want to give up anything of real prospect value for him, unless San Diego is eating a good chunk of the money, and even then, why wouldn't the Red Sox just pay the contract and save the prospect(s)?

The problem is, despite Shields shitty contract he actually has value, unlike Sandoval. He's a shell of his former stuff, but he's still a 200 innings per year pitcher with an ERA below 4.5. Which means he's going to give you 6 innings of 3 run ball every 5 days for the summer. San Diego isn't going to give that up for nothing, or take a damaged 3b they don't need just because the contracts match.

And the way San Diego is playing right now, I don't think they're feeling the pressure to unload the contract and try to use that money to reboot the team.

Shields to the White Sox supposedly, with SD eating half the money or so...interested to see what Chicago gave up

I bet the White Sox take on salary, give up a mid level prospect, and don't get to dump a bad contract onto the Padres.

Shields would be such a bum at Fenway.

The Red Sox must lead the league in hiring ball girls who can really do their jobs.

I'm pretty much willing to give up anything other than Moncada to get Gray or Fernandez at this point.
