i'm lovin this song these days too

it checks a lot of boxes:

structure that requires a few listens to 'get': check

guitar solo that rawks: check

a few deep, chunky guitar chords at times: check

some element of a buildup: check

ed making melodic singing sounds rather than using words, like old times (i.e. the la la la's): check

overall 'fuck you' attitude: check

makes a lot of RMers unhappy: check check check check check check check check

Kudos to KidC for catching that on one listen
I genuinely have this feeling that PJ have, in recent years, been deliberately keeping certain song intros as bland as possible so that the songs' climaxes seem more intense and powerful; there's a bit of it in DOTC too

My initial thoughts on hearing this were kinda dumb disappointment, mainly because the start was so...bland, and the song seemed very disjointed.

On further listens though I really like the run from the solo through to the end, and feel this is a reasonably ok album track.

Funny thing happened last night when I got the email saying the video was available, watched it and really liked it. Amazingly the video managed to actually lift my enjoyment of the song. It somehow framed it in a really fun, off the cuff vibe that suits it.

Not gonna lie, I think I'm a fan.

My initial disappointment stemmed from me just being over this type of song from them. Whatever that type of song is. We’ve debated ad nauseum. I wanted more uniqueness like DOTC. I wanted a super big left turn.

That didn’t happen upon first listen. But the melody worm sunk itself into my dome and it kept drawing me back in and i discovered much more of the song.

Now I’m in love

I knew people would come around on this song. I called it within an hour or two of the release. It’s different, and people just didn’t get it right away.

How did 20 y/o you feel about the chorus to Light Years? Not exactly the same, I realize, but if you squint for a second and didn't hate that chorus, maybe you were wiser then than you think.

The incredible solo section and the way it all just drops out into that best part of the song. You think that maybe the song is going to explode a little bit more after mccresdy is let out of his cage but the energy is quickly zapped and it returns to this tight groove. I love it.

Michael Jackson thriller has a similar thing. The last time he sings “thriller thriller thriller!!’” And you think it’s gonna crescendo again... but immediately hits back to the main groove.

I dig that. A lot.
