He kinda reminds me of Pedro... in that, ya kinda forget just how good/filthy they were for most of their careers... because they stuck around a couple years too long. Then they retire and ya get the best of highlights and ya remember, oh yeah.

He is not. But one thing Seattle has lacked over the past couple of seasons is consistent hitting. One bat isn't going to do it though. They still need to get a true power hitter in there for better run support.

With Smoak set to be their 1B, the Mariners have added Logan Morrison and Corey Hart in the last two hours. I swear they just don't care at all about defense.

True, and I made the same complaint about them when the signed Fielder and were forced to play him at first base and Cabrera at third because they already had Martinez (although they at least sort of learned their lesson by bringing in Iglesias to help Cabrera on the left side). It's a similar situation with the Mariners now, since they have three guys who should DH, but one has to play first and one has to play a corner outfield spot. That doesn't account for Montero, either, (although he's probably not getting out of AAA) and Morales, who I can only assume they'll bring back when he realizes no one is willing to give up a draft pick to sign him.

Smart move by MLB. Guys make too much money to get hurt on a play that's rarely going to come out different because the guys smashed into each other.

So a few years ago, the Brewers had Hart hit 5th behind Braun/Fielder, and he struggled, said the pressure hitting after them got to him... now the Mariners think he can protect Cano hitting 4th coming off 2 knee surgeries?

It will be interesting how they write this new rule. As long as baseball doesnt get to the point where they protect the catcher like the NFL does with QB's...

I'm going to guess that the runner will be declared safe due to interference since the new rules will forbid the catcher from blocking the plate.

but infielders can still drop a knee / block a base?

im guessing this will be real simple... no lowering the shoulder / running into the catcher, you must either slide or try to run around the tag / avoid contact (thats what most high schools / colleges went too I believe) some Senior leagues have done the force play at the plate, treating it just like first base... baseball will never go there, the play at the plate is one of the more dynamic plays in the game, they simply want to avoid the collisions that have lead to too many injuries.

you cant have the catcher unable to block the plate, because youre now basically saying the catcher has to stand infront of the plate, and HAS to sweep tag on every play. Gives way too big of an advantage to the runner.

I'm interested to see how this is implemented. I love close plays at the plate and watching a runner take out the catcher is always entertaining, but I think enough careers have been ruined and seasons ended by these plays that this is the right call.

I just don't get how they say they're going to make changes without seeming to have a clue as to what they're changing. Its sounds like they're going to investigate changes with their minds made up that they'll make changes regardless of their findings. Doesn't seem like a great way to make decisions.

I don't think this is going to be a very hard rule to write. Runners can't knock over the third baseman or the shortstop right now. Treat home base like that. Runners and third base coaches will be more cautious about rounding third and testing an outfielder's arm. It'll be slightly different, but it will be a good, workable rule.
