TBF, the interview itself provides some context: it includes a link to a story about the secret recordings Cohen made of his meetings with Trump, parts of which have been made public through reporting. The New Yorker at least assumes that these are the tapes he's referring to--not some other sort of secret tapes like Nixon's.

Honestly, to me the actual subject is Giuliani being an idiot in the interview. I get that there are tapes, but he's just so dumb about what he's trying to say.

Is the wall worth a shutdown?: 28% yes, 70% no
Do you approve of the president’s approach to immigration?: 38% yes, 60% no (including 62% of indies)

69% of independents want the president to sign a budget without border wall funding, and 1 in 5 respondents reports being affected by the current cutback in services or programs.

In a way, the weakest people of all are the conservatives who quietly recognize how stupid and awful this all is, but choose to pretend that anything a freshman member of the House with one committee assignment says could possibly be more worthy of their concern than actual, disruptive nonsense by the President of the United States.

I do think that we are still in that span of time where the shutdown is likely to be forgotten by election time. But we’re also in that space where the consequences begin to exponentiate, and it’s probably just a matter of weeks before it becomes an event that not only lingers in 2020 voter memories, but also imparts a deep anxiety on every future shutdown. The type where every future pundit will draw it as a reference point. “Could things get as bad as they did in the 2019 shutdown, and how much time is there to reach a deal before that happens?”

Two points on that:

1. If these are the numbers before we reach that tipping point, the White House is in deep shit.

2. Shutdowns have been a favorite 21st century tool of the most conservative Republican legislators. A shutdown that leaves scars is going to taint that weapon, at exactly the moment when the group that most loves using it is gaining power within their party. That’s a recipe that will not help the party recover from the Trump presidency demo losses.

So does Trump deliver the SOTU to a half-empty chamber?
