I prefer "conquered" or "settled" (I don't know a country in existence today that didn't come into existence that way), I just think people should be honest about it and stop trying to justify or moralize it.

While part of the viking representation in culture is a historical misrepresentation, and it is also likely we both have ancestors from those vikings, by todays standards, the vikings did do some awful things.

However, I am probably more guilty from my German side. My great grandfather moved to Norway in 1890 (so no Nazis in the family, but I do have a great uncle that fought for the resistance, and my grandmother hid him). His direct ancestors (father, fathers father, etc.) were all colonels or generals for Prussia.

For all I know, you may have as many vikings in your ancestry, as I have.

I’m from dublin. Founded by vikings. Well there was a town but they came and took over and ‘became more Irish than The Irish themselves’.

My granny’s family could trace her family all the way back to them. She was a ‘Dane’.
That was the byword for the invaders.
