Listened with headphones while doing yard work. It’s my favorite since Vitalogy. What a gift in 2024!

It’s harsh on the ears. No one can deny that.
Gigaton gave us new hope. Earthling gave us reason to believe in that hope. DM gave us the realization that they could still make an album that made us feel the way we did when we listened to the first 7.

Man that record was *not* good.

There’s some stuff on Earthling I really still enjoy a lot. The Dark is probably still my favorite song there just because it is such the amalgam of classic rock when it’s relieved of its weight. Fallout Today is perfect for a solo release. Rose of Jericho rocks, Mrs. Mills is still quite nice, On My Way is contextually heavy. Even for an album that as a whole seems the spritziest of all Pearl Jam related releases off the top of my head, the thing to me hits way more than it misses.

I'd take 3-4 songs off Earthling over 3-4 songs on Dark Matter.

I think Invincible, Try, and In The Dark would make it over a few. Maybe Mrs. Mills. But Earthlings is also great. No shade there.

Dark Matter really needs a song like Fallout Today.

it has something special in that role. Which I like a lot, but it comes late.

I thought this was the most inspired Eddie sounded in several years and that carried over to Dark Matter. The Haves was bad though.

I would need to listen to that song again. But my memory is that I really don't like it. Like, it's probably better than Something Special? But maybe not because I could sing you Something Special and I only remember Fallout Today because I have a visceral negative reaction to the title.

Both Earthling and DM were big misses for me.
Hopefully the end of the Wotman Jam era isn't far away.

It's toward the bottom of my Earthling rankings.
