A majority of Pearl Jam music has been pretty damn poppy.

Honestly, that's an amazingly produced album. I've listened to it way too much.

Some observations after a weekend of listening.


These songs are GROWERS. The last 2 albums have been great on first listen for me and then their appeal has reduced. Historically, PJ albums that have been the most rewarding have been the ones that have taken time to get into. I was a bit apathetic about these 4 songs on Friday, I'm not now. This is a very good sign.

Getaway and Swallowed Whole are amazing songs.

They are trying too hard with LTRP. It sounds like they've copied The Black Keys sound and added a mincy chorus. I still like it though I feel this should be B Side material.

Lightning Bolt is better on record, love the instrumentals. Ed's trying to overdo it near the end and it don't sound pretty.

Ja Ja Drown, Drown Drown... Is my favourite part of the album so far.

Mike is sounding great on everything.

Unfortunately, Ed's vocals and lyrics may now be the weakest part of the band.

Also, I feel there's a parallel between the "different brains" (speaking of gender) and "making love like the lizards", because some lizards (like the Mourning Gecko) are "parthenogenetic", meaning they can change sex and fertilise their own eggs. So, sex and gender, maybe Ed is alluding to the several genders humans in fact have, and also the fact that the"male" and "female" binary is inessential for love to take place.

Somebody whose username I can't remember (the people who are down on this material are just blurring into one for me) insisted that he wouldn't classify anything here as "pop" because it didn't sound like Michael Jackson. There are people around here who are literally offended by the idea that PJ should be allowed to play pop music.

What does pop even mean? Everyone has their own definition.

Absolutely everything PJ have ever put out could be bundled into a a large box labelled "pop".

What is wrong with just calling it rock? It does not always have to be loud to still fit into the genre. The Beatles were a rock band too, in my opinion. With many great pop songs. Or just call it 'music' .

I just dont feel that this album is gonna turn out any different then any other album commercial wise.

Yup. Plus Ten was very popular so that is automatically PJ's poppiest album.

All these terms are interchangeable, that's my point really.

No Pearl Jam album is going to blow up now because the music mainstream culture won't elevate it up there. I don't know if BO'B realises this

I'll be the first to admit when i use poppy in a derogatory manner im using it to mean bland, light, vaguley uplifting and clean and shiny. Or lasers. I know its wrong, but im lazy and unarticulate so y'all gonna have to deal.
