I’m still amazed listening to this. It’s crazy that they created two of my favorite albums this late in their career (DM and ST) with two and a half shitty albums in between them

This album is like that final moment at the end of episode one of Mando. It’s like Top Gun: Maverick. It’s like the first season of Cobra Kai. It’s really gorgeous. It’s my 4th favorite PJ album after the first three, but if I could only listen to one PJ album from now until my demise, it’s this one. Fucking crazy.

I can't quite put it above S/T, but it is equal to it for me. And ST is above the very popular (around here) Riot Act for me.

I really like the album. It's grown on my quite a bit, but there is still some barrier for me. It's definitely better than Backspacer and Lightning Bolt. Absolutely. And I think I'd rank it above S/T as well. But I'm not 100% on that. So it's the bottom 3 or 4 for me. But I still think it's a solid, enjoyable album.

Not to go in circles, at least on my end, but this album to me forces me to think about how I view an album as a cohesive document rather than simply a collection of very nice songs. This album has such an emotional arc for me, perhaps it has something to do with life events as it came out, or it’s just the way the songs are sequenced, but as a single entity, Dark Matter the album, has to be among my favorite of theirs. I won’t commit to the top spot, but it’s competing along with the top half for sure.

Yet, as I break down individual songs, I certainly very much enjoy pretty much all of them, but I wouldn’t be able to justify pitting individual songs against some of my favorites in the catalogue.

I agree that Dark Matter is enhanced by its album sequence. But I think some of the bolded is just a function of time. For whatever reason, I think the aura of importance and history that songs accrue over time looms larger than it does for an album
