here is a stupid question:
why are some albums double LPs that are not double albums? I thought it had to do with reissues, but assume that is wrong?
I strongly prefer the single LPs to avoid having to flip the record after 3 songs. Please educate me.

for a 12" at 33RPM you don't want to go over 18-20 minutes for one side because you'll lose audio fidelity. So any album that's well over 40 minutes should ideally always be a double LP to preserve this. Bubblegum clocks in a little under 50 minutes and i've heard two different pressings (both on 1 LP) and neither sounded great. Blues Funeral clocks in at 55+ minutes i believe and is pressed as a double LP. It's also his best sounding record on vinyl, by far.

Even the Music on Vinyl release? I've got this one on my wishlist.

Sure it's a single LP, but it's not exactly a loud album requiring a lot of physical room.

As a side note I'm really happy with the MOV releases I have, other than the Pearl Jams. QOTSA Lullabies, Mad Season and APC Thirteenth Step sound great, right up there with the best in my collection. Got Jar of Flies/Sap & Blind Melon coming next week!

Anyone have the MOV Screaming Trees?

That's a bit of an exaggeration. Sure 25 minutes is pushing it, but for reference the new Zeppelin's sound amazing and clock in at around 22 minutes a side quite often. There's a lot more to it than just minutes per side. I've got double LP 45s that sound like shit and thin 50 minute single LPs that sound really good.

Forgot to mention that I finally got into the jazz game and ordered "Kind of Blue" + "A Love Supreme." Both were scheduled for delivery today, but the snowstorm delayed them. Tomorrow!

I hate how much shipping costs on eBay. Its the only reason why I don't own those or something similar actually. And when I shop for new speakers its too hard to narrow in on something that doesn't cost a billion dollars.
