I went back to the Troubadour metal door clips.
Also remembered that "Something Special" was the snippet I was most interested/intrigued by back then.

it's really nice to think that we all survived the journey from metal door clips to album relatively unscathed

I still think the way SoF sounds on the metal door clips is superior to the record version. The key is that you're actually mostly hearing the bass line under Mike's soloing, as well as Mike's guitar part, while stone's riff is effectively turned down somewhat. And this is the way I wish it had been produced by Wottman.
BING, BONG, BANNGGG (bass: do do do) - BING, BONG BAAANNNGGGGG
Also, there are more notes in Mike's solo on the record than I could hear in the door version, and I actually think it sounds better with fewer notes - a little more room to breathe.
I have the perfect version of this song in my head, but the record track is still absolutely wonderful, especially the last 90 seconds.

Like Who Ever Said - it is a serviceable meet and potatoes rocker (though the bones of SoF are better and the chorus is great from the jump) that then elevates itself to another level with its bridge

I still kinda can't believe how strongly Dark Matter (the song) is holding on. It might be the only track that is still getting better for me.
Did not see that coming when the single dropped.

Me too, in a big way
Something Special, on the other hand, seems unpopular with everybody.

I was prepared to hate it when they release that snippet and i was pleasantly surprised with the song. I like it a lot.

Do we know who write the music to it? It seems like all of Dark Matter is credited to the band, but is there something that says who wrote what?

I think there was an interview that said it was an Ed/Josh collaboration.

Got it. The worst part of it is that it doesn’t even seem like it belongs on the album.
