Oh, he is Scottish. I thought that was an affectation. Still not for me

The last 25 seconds are so good.
Running shares the same runtime as Comatose.
Running seems like a song that would typically be 2nd or 3rd on the album. I'm surprised it's 8th.
The way Eddie says "crossing my fingers" get me every time, in a good way.

So is he welsh doing a Scottish affectation or is that a welsh accent?

What constitutes as a single nowadays? An official video on youtube? A single release on Spotify? A vinyl single? Promotion on TV ? Original artwork?

Sometimes new songs drop without any of these.. Just a visualizer on youtube and people call it a single.

Dark Matter had a physical release as well and was sent to radio stations? But still no video, perhaps the video that was recorded in LA was not for DM or Running? And this is still al a lead up to whatever the real first single will be? Waiting for Stevie?

Running does not have a video, nor a physical release. It's on Spotify as a single, but doesn't have original artwork. In the past Ive seen single track releases on Spotify change from single to album track once the album was out. When uploading to Spotify you can only brand your song as single, EP or albumtrack.

Wasn't Supersonic out before the release of Backspacer? And no one calls that a single, right?

id assume there is a formal designation somehow given by the band or record label - spotify paperwork to display a song differently, etc? its a good question im guessing someone knows the answer to

supersonic and unemployable were bsides to WWS and The Fixer

It's interesting that there's no option to buy Running as a single on pearljam.com. There was for Dark Matter. You got Dark Matter in MP3, FLAC, WAV, etc. and also a B-side which was just an instrumental of the same song, starting with a few seconds of Ed chanting ala Arc.

you're right about the vagueness of the term "single" in 2024; personally I think they just threw out "Running" as another taste of the album, and it'll sink into being just an album track once the rest is out

This...The designation of a single is essentially devoid of all meaning in 2024. Pumping out those vinyl variants and juicing those first week sales, driven by the devotion of the die-hards, so that you can sell 30k-50k and get to number one is the game.

Once the hardcore fans pre-order, second week sales fall off a cliff, everyone moves on, and the songs settle into playlist shuffle along with the rest of the streaming catalog.

Yeah agree. I remember Quick Escape was released a single when the album came out ; no physical release or video and then Retrograde was release with a video but don’t remember if they listed it out as a single.

Running seems to be more of a release in terms of ; here you have a song but not as a single.
We’ll see what happens next; im guessing next song should have a video maybe.

This style of PJ hasn’t been my thing on the last few albums, so when I heard the snippet I was pretty disappointed. However this is a very layered song and Ed’s delivery is perfect. I am really enjoying it. Plus I really like DM. Excited for the rest of it.

Supersonic was a B-side.
