id assume there is a formal designation somehow given by the band or record label - spotify paperwork to display a song differently, etc? its a good question im guessing someone knows the answer tojoostone wrote:What constitutes as a single nowadays? An official video on youtube? A single release on Spotify? A vinyl single? Promotion on TV ? Original artwork?
Sometimes new songs drop without any of these.. Just a visualizer on youtube and people call it a single.
Dark Matter had a physical release as well and was sent to radio stations? But still no video, perhaps the video that was recorded in LA was not for DM or Running? And this is still al a lead up to whatever the real first single will be? Waiting for Stevie?
Running does not have a video, nor a physical release. It's on Spotify as a single, but doesn't have original artwork. In the past Ive seen single track releases on Spotify change from single to album track once the album was out. When uploading to Spotify you can only brand your song as single, EP or albumtrack.
Wasn't Supersonic out before the release of Backspacer? And no one calls that a single, right?
Its on repeat in my head most days.LetMeSleep wrote:Fucking banger right there.Higgs wrote:Watch watch my my steed steed go go far far.
you're right about the vagueness of the term "single" in 2024; personally I think they just threw out "Running" as another taste of the album, and it'll sink into being just an album track once the rest is outjoostone wrote:What constitutes as a single nowadays? I was singing this to myself yesterday. Great earworm.LetMeSleep wrote:Fucking banger right there.Higgs wrote:Watch watch my my steed steed go go far far.
This...The designation of a single is essentially devoid of all meaning in 2024. Pumping out those vinyl variants and juicing those first week sales, driven by the devotion of the die-hards, so that you can sell 30k-50k and get to number one is the game.Ms Harmless wrote:you're right about the vagueness of the term "single" in 2024; personally I think they just threw out "Running" as another taste of the album, and it'll sink into being just an album track once the rest is outjoostone wrote:What constitutes as a single nowadays? Yeah agree. I remember Quick Escape was released a single when the album came out ; no physical release or video and then Retrograde was release with a video but don’t remember if they listed it out as a single.joostone wrote:What constitutes as a single nowadays?
