Re: 11th album rumors and speculation
I honestly liked Future Days in my first few listens and I actually was pretty defensive of the song, it just has aged very poorly to me. It's exactly what I don't want Pearl Jam to be.

Re: 11th album rumors and speculation
I love it personally, Im fine with it being an outtake, it might be part of its charm for me but I think that the melody is ridiculously catchy and the lyrics, while not great on their own, go wonderfully with it.
I love both the Lost Dogs version and the rough mix.

Re: 11th album rumors and speculation
I see this sort of sentiment from a lot of people. And honestly, I'm not sure I get it. I don't think I have a definition or an expectation of "what I want Pearl Jam to be." Maybe I did once upon a time. But No Code shattered that, if it ever existed. Now, I don't really relate to that idea.chewm wrote:I honestly liked Future Days in my first few listens and I actually was pretty defensive of the song, it just has aged very poorly to me. Future Days would wear thin if it was a song the band did a lot. But there's really only two songs in that vein. Just Breathe and Future Days. And after a career of songs about the longing for commitment and trust and a place to belong they're certainly earned.

Re: 11th album rumors and speculation
It's almost as though Pearl Jam has turned into the band that everyone unfairly accused them of being in 1992. It would appear that the stretch from Vitalogy to Riot Act was a total sham, and now they are showing their true colors. I guess Kurt Cobain was right all along. They are basically a butt rock band, or at least they are now.

Re: 11th album rumors and speculation
I think it's fair to say that Ed specifically heard those types of criticisms and tried his damnedest to steer the band away from those labels during that early stretch, when he started to become much more controlling of the band's output, but eventually, circa 2004-2006?, that just became too tiring and he let go of it. I never pictured the rest of the guys in the band giving a shit either way. Ed seemed to be obsessed with their public persona and whether they had any "indie credibility". That's why he talked about Fugazi all the time and buddied up to Sonic Youth. It's the driving force that inspired songs like Insignificance, Green Disease, In My Tree, and so many others that don't come to mind immediately.WtOB? wrote:this has been my theory for some time.Wendy Carlos's Twin wrote:It's almost as though Pearl Jam has turned into the band that everyone unfairly accused them of being in 1992. Re: 11th album rumors and speculation
Ed's musical background is total U2/Springsteen bombastic stadium cheese-rock, I think he's just as in control of the band's direction now as he was during the Binaural/Riot Act period but he's grown substantially more comfortable with those aspects of his artistic sensibility over the last 10 years or so.
I think it's easy to underrate Beth's influence on Ed during the 90s too. I'm sure being in a relationship with someone who played in an experimental, improvisatory band and listened to similar music rubbed off on him to some extent during that time.
