Compassion has the potential to be an unlimited resource, but medical care does not.

It is unavoidably true that other (often significant) care needs are being sacrificed or delayed because of COVID cases that could have been prevented. Physician and nurse staffing shortages are in the thousands in the United States right now, so you don’t get to wave a magic wand and just have a fully staffed ICU unit…those people have to come from somewhere, so you’re just talking about shuffling the gaps.

I’m not in favor of rationing health care, but lets not indulge in fantasy solutions.

I don't like the idea of rationing health care, but I also don't like the idea of being denied an ICU bed because some dipshit is using it to die from a preventable illness.

I'm jumping in with no prior knowledge of the discussion on here, but I spent Thanksgiving with an ICU nurse in Denver. He said this last wave is all unvacinated and to add insult to injury the families of these people are typically belligerent and living in conspiracy theories. ie. the hospital is making them sicker, the hospital refuses to give them the certain medicines that everyone "knows" will heal them, etc. These stays are often 30 days in length and the ICU has been full since early October.
People are terrible. People don’t always act in their own best interest. Society always should. A society that is concerned with “being denied an ICU bed because some dipshit” did something they don’t agree with is a sick society. Everyone is going to be wrong at times in their life. Love, compassion and leading through example seems like a nice alternative. And if you are so concerned about ICU capacity, build more.
You want me to build a hospital?
Yes

There were some people who worked diligently for months through the start of the pandemic at risk to their own lives, who have since been fired. One option would be to hire them back.

I know you know this, but health care is always rationed. Whether by price, time, need, or priority it's rationed one way or another because like you said medical care isn't an unlimited resource. This is just a particularly visible and potentially troubling version of it.

Neither Nunberg nor Whittaker ascribes to the idea that the virus was man made. In fact, here’s the full context of that of second Nunberg quote:
There is unlikely to be a characteristic sign that a genome has been manipulated, says Jack Nunberg, a virologist at the University of Montana in Missoula, who does not believe the virus came from a lab. If, for instance, scientists had added instructions for a furin cleavage site into the virus’s genome, “there is no way to know whether humans or nature inserted the site”, he says.

You should consider reading the whole thread vice taking one quote, googling it, then going for internet points. In the follow up tweet she states:

The real problem that quote is from 2020, when the Lab Leak was considered not acceptable in polite conversation and researchers were scared of being aligned with Trump, so now that the consensus is on the leak side she should find more recent quotes. That's fair. But, as you are more informed than her on this subject and have a sweet twitter account... reach out. Help her see her mistakes. Correct the disinformation before it spreads!
