I'm just making an observation about the reviews. It's neither a positive or a negative statement. I found it quite odd how clearly the reactions were split by gender. When I say "that makes me pretty nervous", it's the mixed reactions that make me nervous. Especially for a song that appears to be an anchor right in the middle of the 1st half.

I also tend to be much more hesitant towards PJ's ballads as compared to the more rockin' stuff. So when DaveVedder says "80's power ballad" ...that's a bit troubling.

Every guy loved GnR and wore tights and a perm in the 80s. Well, maybe not the tights.

Well, I didn't have the tights (umbros and spandex shorts instead) and I didn't have perm (the lines in the side of the head instead, with spiked hair and BK's!)... but I sure as hell loved me some GnR!

Let me try and present it differently, even though I should just let it go: when King Animal came out, there was a song on there that you described as being melodically bland. I don't recall which one. Shortly thereafter, you commented that you considered all the songs on the album to be at least near-great (or something to that effect).

So what I was trying to say is, your bond with bands seems (to my eyes) to be such that you can be critical of them and recognize the flaws in a song or album, and still appreciate the qualities of that song/album that you DO like without being bothered so much by said flaw(s). Sort of like if you put together a 200 piece puzzle, and five of the pieces are missing...some of us (hi) are irritated as fuck by those missing pieces. "Pearl Jam had 4 years to get this puzzle together, dammit! Why couldn't they fucking get it right? Who produced this shit?" I get the impression that your reaction is more to go "Yeah, there really are some missing pieces. Wish we had those....but look how great this fucking picture is!"

Whether that perception is accurate or not...and I realize I may be off....I certainly don't see it as having negative connotations. And it could explain why some people might perceive your comments to be inconsistent: on one hand you can and will talk at length about how a song is flawed and frustrating...and on the other you're just totally into everything about it that isn't.

Whether or not I'm right, I honestly see that approach as admirable and complimentary.

Ah, now that... that... is completely accurate. The last Incubus album was so, so, so awful that they will have to give me musical GOLD for me to be interested again. Brandon Boyd has completely lost the plot. But by and large, the bands I love, and have for a long time, need to do a huge amount of shit before I'll stop listening to them. I'll be critical while I'm listening but I'll still listen for the good bits and remain obsessed with hearing the new stuff. I have less than a handful of bands to which that applies, and PJ are the most important. It might look like I'm only into a few bands because here on a PJ forum I talk a lot about equivalent bands, rather than brand-new music, just because PJ comparisons abound on a PJ message board. I have an opposite approach to new music, actually; a new / emerging band needs to have done mostly really good stuff for me to stay interested. So it was pretty hard to take, for example, when Midlake released a stinker of a second album after Van Occupanther.

It's all good except you have it backwards re: Midlake, the 2nd one is the only good one.

I don't know it's unthinkable; it's just kind of a conversation non-starter. I mean, it's pretty much another way of saying, "that's your opinion, man." There's no doubt Ed's singing back then (and his singing in general) is a turnoff for people.

I'd certainly never say that either of those examples (now and Ten-era) are Ed at his best on record.

If i may exaggerate a little is kind of a taboo and it's a potential interesting conversation starter because vocals are the one element most people are drawn to. I remember reading very positive ITW reviews of people turned fans surprised how Ed sounds because they remembered Even Flow or Jeremy and disliked it. This gives you perspective of how little known their catalogue is to the general public. Anyone familiar with their records couldn't be surprised by anything on ITW. It also shows you what an impact promoting their records like Ten was promoted may have had on their popularity. It makes more sense that someone who became a fan of ITW/Ed would have also liked No Code or possibly even Vitalogy if those records were promoted similar to how Ten was. Ed's change in singing (from Ten to No Code was huge by rock standards) could have been emphasised during promotion if this was another band.
Ten was huge for them, put them on the map and filled their pockets big time but it also compromised how they're consecutive records are perceived. The majority of people who liked them because of Ten eventually (by album 3) lost interest in them because they wouldn't write Ten any more. Those who didn't like it never bothered with them later because they assumed they sounded like Ten. I want to specify that i don't count hard core and existing fans in this generalisation. A lot of this is because of Ed's singing. I think this is an interesting part of how they are perceived as a band outside of their hardcore fanbase and it all goes back to how Ed sounded on Ten in good part.

Also i don't think is about opinions when it comes to singing. Taste is a word that fits the purpose better. I find that often when people judge singing as good or bad they're essentially comparing it to the style of singing they like. I don't see much of that on RM lately btw.

With 'Sirens' coming up, all signs point to this being very a "dramatic" and "sincere" song (what others may find "cheesy"). I've always thought a dividing line between PJ fans and non-PJ fans, from the very earliest days is buying in to their earnestness and sincerity. The whole reason so many hated on PJ in the early days was because they had no irony and they were a pure 'heart-on-sleeve' band. I wonder if that still exists or some fans have become ones who prefer irony, sarcasm, tongue-in-cheek lyrics and have changed over the years. I wonder if that dividing line still exists?

When Pearl Jam was new, some boy once told me Pearl Jam was music for girls, and I was seriously offended, for he did not mean that as a compliment. I could 'prove' it was not by the statistics of the Bugs mailinglist, which was about 40/60 f/m.

Yeah, I agree for the most part. Vitalogy was a very snide, sarcastic and tongue-in-cheek record though. They've only been that a handful of times since.

While I go to bed now, maybe someone can combine all reviews so far, and for instance color them or something, and then rearrange them so you get all Sirens reviews together, and the others.
Something I would like to do, but sleep is important as well.
