I put Fight Club on last night night after work but was too tired to get through it. I remember watching it so much that I could quote from it right before I moved for college.

I liked it more back then. Tragically, for my college career and general outlook on life in my early 20’s, I should have waited until now to watch it. I would have been better equipped to call bullshit on a few of those palahniuk themes instead of being seduced by them.

It’s a great movie. The guy wrote some brilliant books.

How does it stand up now? I dunno.

I think how well you think it stands up has everything to do with how much you perceive consumer culture to be a threat to your personhood.

The narrator’s response to consumer culture and absentee father figures is to not sleep, create an idealized self, then set up domestic terrorist cells across the country. The script suggests that this all very empowering and freeing. When I watched this as a twenty something undergrad taking all of this to heart without life experience or adequate understanding of my own education, that was a dangerous philosophy to half-ass.

As a thirty something who’s lived a little, made many meaningful connections and has had lots of interesting experiences in life despite getting further and further into the rat race, I just...I dunno. I’m tired. Maybe there really is something to it now that I type all of this out.

I don't know why Joey is falling into his weird "I'll just say you're wrong and refuse to elaborate" tactic again, but "empowering and freeing" are not words I would use to describe Fight Club. It seems like you're missing the bitter irony of the whole thing, reading it straight when it's definitely trying to get at something satirical and subversive.

I saw it again a few months ago, and its brilliant. I picked up different things than when i saw it back in the day.

And yes, Joe is losing his temper with us. He is almost a millennial at this point.
