Takei's objections are really confusing

My guess is that he considers himself an actor not a gay actor and feels bummed out that a character that wasn't written as gay has (maybe, probably) become gay because the actor who played him is a gay icon.

I don't know anything about Star Trek, so forgive this question: was Sulu written explicitly as straight?

No he never had a love interest. His does have a daughter though. Which is why it doesn't contradict anything. Takei seems to feel that since Roddenberry didn't write him gay (mostly because it wouldn't have flown with the studio and the audience) its against Gene's vision. It's dumb but its how he feels.

I guarantee Roddenberry would be thrilled about this decision.

Outside of Kirk, Star Trek characters are about as asexual as it gets. They could all be gay for all we know.
