Like everyone who had a Livejournal in 2005, I went through a Decemberists phase. I can't really stand listening to them much these days but they have a few songs I still really like, such as the January and June hymns, "Here I Dreamt I Was an Architect," and "The Drowned" from The Hazards of Love. I think Meloy writes really nice ballads

I never had a Livejournal. I guess that's why I'm the only one mature and intelligent enough to appreciate a band.

A few months ago I had to edit a video that was soundtrack by "Everything is Awful" from their latest album and there were a lot of precisely timed cuts and animation keyframes so I really learned to hate that song... maybe that's part of the reason I can't listen to them anymore

That's also not their best song. It's a moment in time. It works as such but doesn't do much beyond that.

Sabotage is not the quintessential Beastie Boys track. Its basically a punk rock song.

punk is foremost an attitude

And they started as a punk band. I also initially raised an eyebrow at "Sabotage" but it's not a bad pick for Beastie Boys. A big thing with them was sampling, though, and "Sabotage" leaves that out entirely. After thinking about it for a bit, I'd pick "Make Some Noise": old-school hip-hop braggadocio with a hint of their political side, with lots of sampling but also their funky sci-fi instrumental stylings. And a cowbell break

But then there’s not guitar

Yes there is! But anyway, there's more "Make Some Noise"-type music than there is "Sabotage"-type music in their discography, so I'm comfortable leaning that way for an inherently reductive exercise like this one

Please point to the guitar in that song bc I’m having trouble remembering it

Listening now, I remembered there being some wah-wah funk guitar but I guess not

As much as I love this song, I don’t think it’s the best representation; that album is generally more jazzy than their other stuff. But I Set My Face To The Hillside from the same album kind of bridges the gap between their jazzy stuff and their more proggy and IDM stuff ?

Good points, all. I wasn't entirely convinced myself, but I thought it a good potential entry point for the band. I was also considering "Swung From the Gutters," or perhaps "Djed." It is hard to find something that captures all their sound, especially with the change in synth style on the last two albums.

"I Set My Face to the Hillside" is my favorite Tortoise song, but I never got the impression that it was representative of their whole sound realm. I'll have to give it another listen soon with that in mind and see what I think.
